A bit of a weird one - really chaotic and loud sometimes. Occasionally, it's too much for me, in particular 'A Foggy Day' with all its noisy sirenes. The last track is really, really good though. So yeah mixed feelings

A solid album by Mingus with great sax playing, but wven better composing. Mingus does not just solo himself, but gives a lot of time to the piano and bass too. For the time the compositions are damn solid. A very sturdy jazz record.

This is without a doubt some of the most amazing "early work" I've ever listened to. One of the things that has drawn me to Mingus is his ability to so adeptly marry the liberal and conservative elements of jazz; that skill is displayed wonderfully here. New, yet not at all foreign, and a fantastic album for the budding jazz connoisseur. 4.1/5
