5 years of making music (not counting her run as Katy Hudson in 2001) and no growth has been seen by Katy Perry whatsoever. Zero growth. Legendary Lovers, Birthday and Double Rainbow were all forgettable, filler tracks. Only decent song here was Dark Horse because at least she attempted something new to experiment with. I wasn't the same person I was 5 years ago in 2010 and this album didn't break any new boundaries for me.

The first half of this album is inconsistent, while the second half is just dull. It's a shame, too, because there are several songs on here ("Dark Horse," "Ghost," and "By the Grace of God") that could easily belong on a 3.5 album. Overall, though, this album doesn't have any sort of edge or anything that makes Katy truly distinguishable from other artists out there.

As repetitive and formulaic and lacking in any surprises whatsoever as it may be, there's actually not a lot on here that would be offensive to those who listen to music on a "deeper" level. Sometimes (actually, almost throughout the entirety of the album) the lyrics are vapid, but Ms. Perry is still a good vocalist on this album of infectious, foot-stomping, radio-friendly pop anthems.
