Shitty pop singles prevent Light Grenades from being as effective as it could have been, but it's still a fun journey.

There are parts of Light Grenades that are a little on the weak side, but overall I'm still impressed with the band's ability to keep their sound fresh. I like that they're having Ben contribute to the background vocals more; something I thought that the band had been really lacking up until "A Crow..." Having Chris Kilmore do more auxillary work paid off huge too, in my opinion. And of course, Mike and Jose continue to impress me with the diversity they show in the songs, especially the one's showing off the band's ability to work with more complex time signatures.
Anyhow, it's most definitely worth more than one listen, because it's only after that first one do you really pick up on the gems like "Rogues", "Pendulous Threads", "Paper Shoes" and "A Kiss to Send Us Off." The album isn't flawless, but it's got some great licks. Looking forward to seeing these guys in Cleveland.

All the hype about Incubus's new album was mostly for naught. Whether comparing to any other album, or just judging the album with a blank slate, this was truly a disappointment. Mike's skills on the guitar are being pacified so that we can all enjoy Brandon's unsuccessful exploration into higher octaves. I thought he would have learned his lesson after ACLOTM. The baselines (except in Diamonds and Coal) are rather uninspired. If you're looking for the reliable turntables on this album, you'll starve to death. It's really more easy listening kind of music, but some songs are difficult to bear at all (Oil and Water, Earth to Bella, Light Grenades, and Love Hurts). Anna Molly, Paper Shoes, and Pendulous Threads are pretty alright. Oh, and in case you didn't know that all diamonds start as coal, listen to this album: they'll tell you about it exactly 11 times on track nine.

I have mixed feelings about Light Grenades.......as im sure many others do. The intro song, Quicksand, was actually a really well - written song with interesting style. A Kiss to Send us off definately is the song that drives the rest of the album....its by far my favorite. Dig is another song that stands out with its Morning View type of intrumentalist recording and excellent lyrics. Anna Molly is the perfect recording for Incubus....every instrumentalist does his part well in blowing your mind with this one. Also, the song, Light Grenades, is one of my favorites, despite the low time, because the guitar is completely insane and the whole song has a beat that exists in S.C.I.E.N.C.E. Still, some weak points are present in this album, like Diamonds and Coal, and Earth to Bella Pt 1 and 2. These songs honestly should not have been made; there is basically nothing that makes these titles quality songs. Pendulous Threads is an OK song, but I must say that the guitar solo in it makes it a bit more awesome. Overall, you should buy this album if not already......yet it still doesn't raise the bar quite enough for me to enjoy it more than A Crow Left of the Murder or Morning View.

It's a listenable album, I'll give it that. But Brandon continutes to sing out of his range, and the lyrics are just so-so. But Mike, Incubus' only remaining talent, and his guitar mastery is what keeps Light Grenades from being a total bust. And to be fair, Ben's bass playing has improved. This is one of those albums that takes a few listens to know how you really feel. Overall, I'm disappointed, but still entertained. I recommend Dig, Rouges, Paper Shoes, and Pendulous Threads. I'm not a fan of Earth to Bella (I and II) or Love Hurts. I say give it a listen.

Sitting on the skyscraper as one of Incubus' underrated releases, it's kind of a shame their sixth full-length recording Light Grenades doesn't earn as much admiration as it probably should. Can you believe that almost 10 years have gone by since the album was first released? Anyway, I feel as if this band didn't do a lot of wrong here, as just about every track has something to like inside and out; with the exception of "Love Hurts," "Oil and Water," and "Diamonds and Coal", as those three songs are rather immobile and tough to really adore. On a songwriting level, Incubus are debatably at their most varied and mature, being able to go from the tender "Dig" to the quite vehement title track whilst not falling into any nearby creeks, and Brendan O'Brien's production style clearly fits the direction these boys took. Overall, an enthralling listen that ought to be dissected more than it actually needs to be underestimated.

Fuck it. I went from a 3.5 to a 4 and don't feel guilty. It just has replay value up the wazoo more than Make Yourself or anything earlier, for me, and it always sounds fresh and light on its feet (no pun intended).

Despite what a lot of people are saying about this album, I'd say this album shows how the band members have changed as individuals. That was reflected ever so clearly in this record. Sure, they're no longer funky and out-of-the-box. But when you look at each individual songs, they're solid tracks. Less experimenting but improved sound quality and more attention to details. To me, it just seems like they've finally found the genre they want to be in.

I did like Dig, Rogues and Paper Shoes.... the rest for me was just all over the place... Too many tracks seemed like they were made to please new and young fans.... Love hurts.... that song really made me angry... Because I really didn't like it... they kept playing it on the radio for weeks and weeks. This for me is the most mainstream album they've ever made.

descent review but i think rogues is one of the best songs on there. Rogues is good offers an upbeat rock temp more closely resembling incubus' old stuff. Dig is nice and mellow and deff does show ther new direction as well as Love Hurts which is also a pretty good song considering their new foundation (which i do not prefer...id much rather listen to science, fungus amungus, morning view, and make yourself.
Pendelous Threads and Diamonds and Coal are also pretty good. Pendelous Threads also is more along the lines of their old stuff which is probably why i like it. has a bit of a science feel to it which is pretty nostalgic.
Overall i think the album is descent but short too. I dont know if its worth the purchase unles u can just download the songs. At first i didnt like it but now its kind of growing on me. THe only thing i dont like about the sound is some of it is a little more pop-ish mainstream sounding i guess i should say...not the alternative we are all used to incubus sounding like.

I fail to see the cohesion of this album that so many keep speaking of, nor do I get why the earlier albums get put off as inconsistent. Those albums, of them all, certainly have a much more collective musical direction and, in my opinion, greater accomplishments than is ever even hinted at in Light Grenades.

I've been a long time Incubus fan (Enjoy anyone?). Nothing could top the funk rooted days of Fungus or even the more expieremental jaunts as Science, but nonetheless this is a great album. Brenden O'Brian did an amazing job producing an album that breaks what "rock" is supposed to sound like and made something raw. The band has great strength in improvisationational and the performance aspects of being a band. O'Brian knew this and engineered the album accordingly. I think since the band is notoriously bad for releasing albums in lengthy intervals, each new album is expected to be much more "ground breaking" than they really are. This album probablly wont seem to fit in the excellent catagory for sometime because Incubus is and will always be at the cutting edge of the evoloution of music.

I found this album a major disappointment after falling in love with make yourself and the untouchable morning view, this record just seemed to have to much filler. Apart from the first single Anna Molly and Dig there is very little on this album to get excited about.

this album was a fairly large change for the band. Incubus can just never stick with one sound, can they? Its just that this album is MUCH different and thats about all there is to say. Depending on who you are and which Incubus u like (S.C.I.E.N.C.E fans versus Morning View fans) this album is either good or bad and most people find it average. I find it amazing, catchy, and even though the lyrics are at times cliche i can live with it. Highly recommend: A Kiss To Send Us Off, Anna Molly, Rogues, and Pendulous Threads. Great Album

Like what was said in the main review (check it out) this album is another direction for incubus. I recently broke it down on paper and tracked the changes they have made from album to album, this is exactly where Incubus needed to go I think. If your looking for the high-points of the album, I would say check out Anna Molly of course, Dig, if your looking for something more abrasive, give Light Grenades (the track) a listen. Very impressive album in my opinion.

At first, I thought that this album wasn't too good. But after I listened to it a few more times I realized that it actually is very good. It was hard for me to accept this new music as part of the wonderful Incubus music that I'm used to, but now I think it's awesome. I wasn't to pleased with the Earth To Bella's and Quicksand, but everything else was pretty good. The only other complaint that I have is I think that A Kiss To Send Us Off is a little overproduced, but it's a good album overall.

To be honest the album didn't do anything for me at first listen.
However this was characteristic of "A Crow Left of the Murder" also. The truth is Incubus likes to reinvent themselves which is a great because it keeps them fresh and new. I loved A crow left of the murder after several plays. In fact I still listen to it today. The new album "Light Grenades" has had the same effect. I wasnt too fond of it at first but then it grew on me. I beleive It will take most people a couple of plays to get on board with this album as well. There are a few tracks that needed to be left out such as Earth to Bella but for the most part kudos to Incubus for what may turn out to be another platinum album!

I love how each of the tracks go in a different direction, I think one of the trademarks of a good band is that they can vary their style as they go. However, I do agree that this album has a bit less edge than previous, but I don't think that means that the next will not have more edge to it. It did take abit to grow on me, but most of the Incubus albums do in my opinion. Great album, solid, listenable, interesting, keeps your head bobbing.....

I really enjoy incubus (no pun intended) and by far my favorite is there earlier stuff (S.C.I.E.N.C.E.) I really respected there courage to grow and evolve as musicians. However, i feel Light Grenades falls just short of the incubus i like. The lyrics are mediocre and often too cheesey (emo comes to mind too). It just seems to me that they lost a little bit of their edge. Seems all the songs are (although not directly) about a girl, and frankly singing about a girl is old unless its got edge to it. Although i just got the CD yesterday and probably didnt give it a fair shot yet, what i did hear was unimpressive.
