This album is perfect and full of amazing compositions.To think this was released in 1969 it showed great promise for solo zappa and he was truly ahead of his time.

The experience listening to Son of Mr. Green Genes was out of body, what a true masterpiece. Willie the Pimp was the only song I'd listened to before spinning this whole record. This may even jump up to a 5/5 after a few more listens.

Album absolutely rips. Basically just a huge jazz-fusion jam all the way theough. First three tracks are flawless, Gumbo is mostly amazing, however the jazzier piano oriented traxks miss the mark for me. Still amazing though.

The aural equivalent of walking into a strip club at 10:30 PM, when the sky is purple and vascular and the clouds are orange, rapidly disappearing. A musclebound bouncer takes your red leather trenchcoat and you remove your bright yellow aviators and observe the bouncing, bodacious boobies and drunken sailors screaming slurred obscenities. The floor is filthy, the walls are sweating, everybody's skin looks pale blue beneath the cheap lights... yeah, that's what this album is like. You should listen to it.

"A movie for your ears", Zappa proclaims in the liner notes. Undoubtedly it's something low-budget and X-rated. Maybe it's just because of "Willie the Pimp", but everything Zappa does here sounds unspeakably filthy to my ears-filthy, and manipulative. Hot Rats has plenty of visceral (albeit cheap and gimmicky) thrills to offer, provided you don't mind the feeling that you've just spent forty-five minutes masturbating to rodent pornography.
