"The Looking Glass" gets the award for the most blatant and terrible Rush rip-off I have ever heard. Why do people still care about this band?

Really good stuff. The songs are shorter and more structured with hardly and wankery - everything there is to aid the song. Musically it's heavy, yet proggy but not over the top and there's some classic DT sounds that hark back to I&W.rMangini gives an admirable performance as does Myung (it's so good to be able to hear the bass again) and the orchestral section on Illumination Theory is just outstanding. Dream Theater is a definite improvement over the previous DT album, however, the band has done infinitely better in the past and in this album, they are not willing to try new things anymore. To give back what's due though, Dream Theater make a decent effort in recapturing the spirit of the 1993 album Awake. The guitars sound heavier, Rudess's keys are actually working their way in the background on some songs (of course he is not Kevin Moore at that.-) and there are a few mildly enjoyable songs to go back to sometime.

PERSONALLY, THIS ALBUM IS PERFECT! I don't really know why in this site, the ratings are so low... This band never dissapoints me...My favorite songs: "The bigger picture" (My favorite song of all times and genres of music), "Surrender to reason", "The enemy inside", "The looking glass" and "Illumination theory"....so beautiful music...

I can understand people's, gripes with the production, but I was never too overly picky about things like that, and as long as it's not as compressed and over-produced as Death Magnetic, it's ok in my book. Some really great tracks on here, and possibly their best effort since Train of Thought (yes, I'm prepared for the lynching).

The album title makes sense, as this basically sounds exactly like what one might expect from DT. It is all on here, wankery, melody, prog and metal. One of my main highlights of this album is the involvement of Rudess and Myung that has seemed to strongly increase since Portnoy's departure. Illumination Theory is also DT's best epic and track since In the Presence of Enemies imo.

Dream Theater - compact edition. This one suffers from a lack of originality and formulaicness, but it's still Dream Theater and their technical skill alone makes up for a great album. First 3/4 tracks and Illumination Theory are stand-outs. The rest is just ok.

Dream Theater's eponymous album is a true regression, a collection of songs that's less concerned with living up to the band's progressive reputation and more content with keeping the wheels turning. It's fine for enjoyment's sake, but those wanting something more competent or elaborate probably won't give this particular chapter much regard.

At first, I thought what everyone else seems to be thinking. I also don't like Mike Mangini compared to Portnoy (although he is more technical). But since hearing the album more times, and especially watching them live (where they sound much BETTER than any other band, progressive or not, and have improved their live production), I think it still is a great album, despite it sounding similar to past albums. Also, John Petrucci never ceases to improve guitar-wise and composition-wise. Plus, his new guitars, JM's new bass, and JR's toys make a difference when it comes to sounding good. "The Looking Glass", "Illumination Theory" and "False Awakening Suite" will be DT classics soon.

Meh, really don't understand why they chose to self-title this album. There's nothing new here. And the songs, with a couple of exceptions, are pretty boring. Myung's role does pleasantly expand here, but I find LaBrie's vocals to be less striking than usual. Never was a fan of the selection of Mangini as "new drummer," who for the second straight album doesn't seem to add anything new.
