I gave this a higher score than it deserves because Pitchfork should go to hell. I could understand them giving this a 6 or even a 5.5, but a one? what a fucking outrage. Pretentious dickbags.

If you ever wondered what the Pixies would sound like making pop music in the 90's... that
would be track 1 and 2. It's the Pixies if they hadn't been inventive and original. Good but
nothing anyone must hear. The closest they get to their former energy would be on tracks 3
and 4 which bump it from a 3 to a 4 for me. the second half makes me wonder where in the
hell the first half came from. If they put out an album entirely like Indie City and What
Goes Boom they could very well have a new Surfer Rosa or Doolittle on their hands. I don't
have the right to hurl that mantle back on them but I can hope and dream can't I?

you'd never expect to say 'average' of a Pixies release, but this is it. It's not bad, just not particularly imaginative, which is what you'd like to hear from Black Francis and co., even twenty years later. I think the songwriting is still pretty good, but what often happens with older groups is they start playing a bit too 'correctly' and they rest on laurels in terms of production style.
