A soulful and beautiful album made by a beautiful human being who left us far too soon. Ranked as my favourite Marvin Gaye album, favourite album of 1971, 3rd favourite album of the 1970s, and 6th favourite album of all time.

34/1001rMarvin Gaye?s What?s Going On might be one of soul?s most seminal albums, and it?s importance for later developments can?t be understated. Sometimes influential doesn?t mean great, however, this isn?t one of those times. rWhat?s going on is an incredibly interesting concept album, with each and every song seamlessly flowing into one another, creating a rather cohesive piece of music rather than individual songs. The album opens with arguably Gaye?s best and most iconic song, What?s Going On. The album flows and ebbs with a chill mood throughout. Other highlights include Mercy Mercy Me, the ambitious Right On and Inner City Blues, which smartly concludes the album with a sample of the opening track.

Great album, truly important art to be made, is it the best album of all time? Not really. Theres a Riot Goin On is not only an answer to this albums question, but also an answer that expands and embellishes what the question set out for.

A phenomenal album with some of the most positive, loving lyricism in the history of music. So much soul, passion, and storytelling in each track, offering an incredible listening experience both the first time and on repeat listens. The harmonies pull you in, and the instrumentals complimenting Marvin's vocal work like nothing I've ever seen keeps you there. Delving into the history of this album, as well as Marvin Gaye as both a man and musician, will only give you more appreciation for "What's Going On", one of the best albums ever produced.

Instant classic, the album is insane, it flows so perfectly and i have difficulties to find what dont work on this album, its a must listen. Its been 50 years since this album came out, and i understand why its high on almost all "Best albums" lists. Its a bit too much religious for my taste, but i dont mind, because its so good 4,7/5

It's crazy how socially applicable the messages on this album are to this day. I'd argue that they are more important now than ever. Truly a timeless classic, and one of the most important records ever released. Not just for soul, but for music in general.

The review written about this album here states that his political stature is weak, but rather, Marvin Gaye is taking a much different approach. Instead of going all out, Malcolm X-style revolt music, he's making an approach that is more like Gandhi than anything else. His music is smooth, subtle, warm to the touch, but still gets message across effectively. This album isn't so much about it's politics neither, rather, it's a showing on Motown's musical strength, and Gaye's light vocals, lacing it.
