I can stand in defence for the tiniest bit of this because it is just funny to listen to and I do give a lot more props than maybe I should. But it IS fun to listen to and it makes me feel like a festival goer or perhaps a party clown

Sugar-coated dance anthems that - according to Avicii himself - incorporate elements of other genres such as country music. Still gotta find these tbh, apart maybe from that guitar line on "Wake Me Up". The bulk of the album is full of the early 2010s electro-house shtick that inevitably ended in some messy, wannabe-arena half-anthems full of claps and synthetic instruments that should be organic. And then, there's "Dear Boy". I've got no clue why, but it quickly became a staple banger within my group of friends, the kind of track that had to be played at every party. To this day, "Dear Boy" remains a gate to 2013. That's something.

considering how famous/popular he was at the time, trying to mix genres like he did deserves rapplause. however, concept=/=product, and this album, for the most part, does not.

To be fair, in response to Brostep, I admit the point about the "whoosh" was a little misinformed.(apparently deadmau5 and Spinnin' Records didn't exist at the time of that comment being posted) However, I will say that Avicii does know how to use that sound to its full extent. And maybe I'm biased because I love Avicii to death, but the Harlem Shake is nowhere near the quality of this album. If you judge it by itself, yes, it is a pretty good piece of work. But in my opinion, it's nowhere near as good as this album. Haters gonna hate.

If the annoying singles "Hey Brother" and "Wake Me Up" (the latter featuring a disastrous guest appearance by Mike Einziger) aren't convincing you that True is a bland, false album, then I want you as the listener to take a gander at this record's other tracks which are stereotypical EDM 'jams' messed up by a hodgepodge of styles such as bluegrass and country-pop; the results are grating at best. This is a good release for mostly the new generation to get down to, but Avicii doesn't even try to offer anything else.

Not innovative by any means -- this album rides the whole "let's mix EDM with other genres" wave, not creates it --, but pleasurable to listen to anyway. Highlights: "Wake Me Up", "Addicted To You", "Lay Me Down", "Heart Upon My Sleeve".
