This is what happens when some people are bored in prison. They start promoting crap ambient albums as musical projects. And of course, Burzum fans praise this as the epitome of musical bliss simply because a criminal misfit that has a somewhat legendary status (mostly for negative non-musical aspects) has released it. If people actually made an effort to clean up their ears before listening to this, this album would have gotten proper treatment. A one way ticket to the garbage dump. But since we live in the age of hipsterdom, this stuff is recognized as music. No, this is amateur hour. Some bored prison convict playing with the keyboard and releasing his noise as music. Laughable.

Well, what can you say. It's a crazy Norwegian murderer playing with a keyboard. Crazy or not, this little experiment of his isn't bad at all. Many of the melodies and passages are actually quite nice and it features lots more variety than many of his previous and newer albums.

Definitely better than the previous album. However, this album is still not a metal one, and while the music is beautiful overall, it requires reading the lyrics and thinking about the topic to truly appreciate it. Perhaps more than any other Burzum album I've heard so far, this one has a very pagan feel to it.

There is one word that can describe this album: mesmerizing. From the first track to the last, this album takes you through the mind of Varg through radiant ambient. Unlike Daudi Baldrs, this album is not disjointed and laughable, it keeps the listener interested and can calm me down like no other. Instrument use (or ad least replication with the computer) is all in its place, with nothing awkward to make you confused or seem like the album is losing its edge. The whole album is quite slow, but the songs never really drag because the album is just over 30 minutes, so its not too long. Don't be turned off by this album because of his previous ambient effort, Hlidskalf is a relaxing, awe inspiring piece of ambient art, and is perfect for sleeping or just chilling out. This however is not an album to play in the car, for it may put you to sleep.
