Brilliant riffs, fantastic vox and killer leads are all present here. The only that 'drags' this down is its familiarity, some songs tend to blend into one another in an awkward way. But hey, its beyond solid and Carcass is back baby!

wow this is actually fucking great. sounds like where i would've expected them to go after Heartwork (not that Swangsong was bad by any means, this just feels like the natural progression of their early 90s sound). rock on 2013 death metal, it's been a fantastic year so far.

With the release of Heartwork, Carcass were one of the originators of Melodic Death Metal. Unfortunately, they followed up that landmark release with the underwhelming (but still decent) Swansong, before breaking up. Who would have thought that nearly twenty years later Carcass would come back on the scene and release the album that should have always come after Heartwork? Surgical Steel brings back the two things most modern melodic metal bands seem to be missing: ferocious riffs and aggression. They accomplished this by bringing in the best of their last three albums. There's the aggression and blast beats of Necroticism, the groove and accessibility of Swansong, and the huge riffs, melodic leads, and soaring guitar solos of Heartwork. So, while Surgical Steel might not have the unique sound that Heartwork did back in the day, it's still a better melodic death metal album than 90% of the neutered stuff that has been released since then.

Carcass comes back stronger than ever, delivering stellar, interesting guitar work and some killer, evil hooks. Drumming from new drummer Daniel Wilding is killer and up to par with what Ken Owen did on other albums. Varied, consistent, and totally superb album from the death metal legends. Worth the 17 year wait. 4-4.5/5.

This is Carcass's first album in years, and while I'm not familiar with their other works, I can say that I'm definitely impressed by Surgical Steel, and in fact will be listening to it for many years to come. This is a heavy, thrashy melodeath album that definitely proves to me that Carcass are as good as others have said they are.

Now when I said that this was the year of the come back album this was the album I was referring too. And Honesty what other album could it have been. Carcass saw such meteoric rise with Surgical Steel the music had to be as good as the hype suggests, and of course it not only is, but its better! It boggles the mind how Carcass were able to pull this off, I mean just imagine waiting 17 years and then releasing an album that not only sounds as good as your two classic albums but sounds as if it was released right in between them (I am talking about Necroticism and Heartwork of course). From when the Master Butcher's Apron starts all the way to the closing seconds of the Mount of Execution the album is a true masterwork. I also want to take a brief second to mention just how amazing closer Mount of Execution is. It has it all from head bangable riffs to beautiful acoustic interludes. Really this could be said about Surgical Steel as a whole which has everything and then some. Best Songs: Unfit For Human Consumption, Master Butcher's Apron, and Mount of Execution.

Everything you could hope for in a reunion - they don't mess with the formula too much nor do they offer a watered down attempt to simply replicate. A little more edgy then Heartwork, a little more driving than Swansong, but with its fair share of bland riffs and unconvincing progressions. Its not perfect but its spirit is totally right.

Carcass said their older sound was making a comeback...they did not lie at all. This is right on the line between Necroticism and Heartwork, with killer production, and riffs that keep your attention for the entire time. Good variance, a decent time table? Makes for a surprisingly sweet DM release even in 2013.

Doesn't hit me in the core of my soul on first listen like Heartwork did back in the day, but it's a more than worthwhile return for the legendary band. It musically feels somewhere between Heartwork and Swansong, so the darkness of Necroticism and earlier is almost entirely lost, but the band's proficiency is otherwise self-evident. 4.1/5
