Is it just me, or are the best moments on this album fleeting? Every time it sounds like a song is just about to get ridiculously good and evolve into something beautiful, it ends. Don't get me wrong, Janelle's at the top of her game here, and this will go down as the quintessential soul/r&b album of the year, it's just maddeningly frustrating at times

Might be long, but i think this is more cohesive than The Archandroid and has better tracks. Q.U.E.E.N, The Electric Lady and We Were Rock and Roll are some of the best songs that Janelle has produced. Ghetto Woman is the closest thing anyone has gotten to Music of My Mind Stevie Wonder since the man himself left his classics period. Suite V is slightly less exciting than IV, but for me it's still an enjoyable listen. The Electric Lady is the RnB track of the year in my book.

Oh my god that's some funky shit. The concept is much more upfront than on The ArchAndroid but the music is more rooted in the 70s, which clearly doesn't help when doing a futuristic concept album. Other than that, it's less grand than her first album, and better done than her next one. I wanna see the ELECTRO BOOTY CONTEST man, those interludes were awesome in setting the overall mood.

There are several great songs on this, particularly the title track and Queen, yet the album has too many uninspired tracks (especially the ballads) and, as a whole, feels tacked together, which is further worsened by the unnecessary interludes (although I appreciate the "world-building" aspect they have to them). While it's never terrible (now I'm looking at you, Dirty Computer), it's still an underwhelming follow-up to the amazing ArchAndroid. - 6.0

KaLL is very spot on when referring how this album is certainly not as adventurous as Ms. Monae's debut album but manages to find a sound that's uniquely poppy and highly cerebral. Perhaps one of the few "pop" albums I actually enjoyed listening to and definitely recommend this for any interested. (12/18/16) This is perhaps one of the best electronica albums of this decade, and I cannot wait to hear the "finale" of Ms. Monae's "concept" albums.

Janelle Monae's second album, The Electric Lady, is a soulful and fun-filled blast that excels in immediate high class. What she does so smart is the exceptional and working blend of genres from Soul, R&B to Funk and Pop Ballads. As well as that the Suite Overtures this time aren't skip-worthy, the interludes are interesting and funny, and there's a good number of stand-out tracks. The Electric Lady picks up where her debut album left off and immediately shines in every degree.
