Misery Signals is certainly adapting to popular trends but they definitely maintain what made them unique; they masterfully release an album with both versatility and consistency in both atmosphere, and quality songwriting. You're going to find fast, "off timey" rhythms, dissonant melodies, soaring, catchy hooks. You'll also find driving punk beats, good old metal riffing, and bone crushing breakdowns. None of it however, gets in the way of the overall feel of the album. Misery Signals have managed to get a little more eccentric while maturing in amazing ways. I truly feel this is the metal album of the year that will please both longtime fans, newcomers, and past skeptics alike.

Absent Light basically combines and sums up Misery Signals' career. Fitting, since they needed to show everyone why they were so lauded in the first place after five years away and multiple line-up changes. This is a fantastic new chapter in the history of Misery Signals.

As a huge fan of Misery Signals, this album is a bit disappointing. I enjoyed about 4 songs in particular on this album. As a long-time Misery Signals fan I can safely give this a solid 4 whereas Magnum Heart/Controller are 4.5 and Mirrors is a 4.rI find the songs are slower overall and the use of strings can come off as a tad cheesy sometimes. The production is too generic for this band and I wish they'd gone with Townsend again, I miss the warmth of Controller.rStill, they're all masterful at their instruments so they produced another banger overall. Last two tracks are the best imo.

Songwriting is pretty solid. Each musician is at the top of their game, and Karl kills it on the vocals (his cleans are pretty great too when featured). It's very Shai Hulud-y... which I think is great. It feels exactly like what I would expect from the follow up to Controllers.
