4.0 excellent | MisterTornado | June 26th 13 | I'm glad Obama decided to let Julianna Barwick out of Area 51 so she could tell us all about the time she flew to the moon and back on a crystal sleigh guided by winged unicorns. As the story goes... upon landing inside a snuggly moon crater, draped in thick layers of silk and ivory, she met her angelic choir of eternally adolescent sirens (as foretold by Oz after her whimsical affair in Emerald City). It was here they composed "Nepenthe", an aural medicine of sorrow that could cure sadness. Soon after Nepenthe was composed inside the crater and Julianna flew off in her crystal sleigh into a spacey abyss, the moon cried a single tear that flew down to Earth and showered the planet in optimism and infinite kindness for all of its inhabitants.

4.0 excellent | Bedex | December 22nd 23 | An ever shifting dreamscape of more or less vocal ambient with gorgeous layered chorals, this is Julianna doing what we've previously heard her do, but really well executed. A lot of this could be a magnificient soundtrack, and it leaves the mind to meander in places full of tampered light. It's a bit too single flow to have top tier genius highlights to pinpoint, although some tracks like 2 or 5 do stand out, but there aren't really lows to speak of either. It's a good one to jam and drown into without trying to separate the tracks. Now this is not at all ambient sadfolk like Grouper or Sea Oleena who she is often likened to, a musical corner which I would love to hear more from, but I don't think it would be fair to rate Julianna's well crafted work on this basis. 3.85

4.0 excellent | Erwann S. STAFF | March 31st 22 | Another gorgeous ambient release enhanced by Barwick's ethereal stance on a cappella vocals, Nepenthe wears its pop influences prouder than ever. It's thus more maximalist than the peaceful The Magic Place, even though she - fortunately - doesn't fall into Enya territories. When the multilayered vocals and soothing ambient are complemented with strings like on "Pyrrhic", this is an absolute stunner.

3.0 good | lullomatic | September 8th 13 | Love Julianna's outputs and like this album, but I find it a bit underwhelmig, repetitive and less evocative than The Magic Place
