What these alternative versions of the tracks from Dead End Kings show, with the drums "dethroned" and the guitars "uncrowned" (according to the band), is that a handful of these tracks are actually very boring without really heavy instrumentation used for their composition. The ambiance and acoustic guitars are a nice change though. They bring out a side of the music that definitely wasn't as prominent--though definitely present on Dead End Kings.

In some ways, this completely eclipses Dead End Kings; in others, it struggles to captivate where its sibling so easily excelled. The best moments are often stretches of certain tracks, and it's during these points that I almost want the songs to completely transform into something different. When all is said and done, however, this is an interesting glimpse into what a raw, naturalistic Katatonia would sound like.

With Dead End Kings Katatonia coped adequately with the burn out syndrome that their previous magnum opus induced. With Dethroned & Uncrowned though, I see a band at the last stages of the healing process, as the album makes me want to revisit Dead End Kings and vice versa.
