While having phenomenal songs like Bastards and No shame, the other songs blend together in a sea of recycled hardcore riffs that don't really stand out. The story telling on most of these is rather subpar too

Making every album follow the same concept was gonna catch up with them eventually, and sure enough this is mostly Defeater by the numbers and nothing more. Sure, it's got some nice quiet, groovier parts to it that their last effort didn't have, but those only really come in for the last few songs. Solid, but they're sort of on autopilot right now, would've been better as an EP.

It's safe that say that if you haven't already been won over by Defeater's rough, abrasive yet coherently approachable brand of melodic hardcore then Letters Home will not likely not appease you.

As a huge Defeater fanboy, I feel compelled to love this, but truth be told, I'm finding it hard to. The fact that half of the tracks share the same 'No' prefix make it hard to distinguish between them, while the remainder of the tracks are solid but very few outstanding. A few exceptions being 'Bastards', 'No Relief' and 'Rabbit Foot' which save the album from being average. Ambition was what kept Empty Days and Sleepless Nights from becoming stale, but to much disappointment, on Letters Home, it feels like the band have regressed somewhat. Is it a bad album? No. Is it disappointing? Unfortunately, yeah, it is.

Way better than EDASN best part of that album was the acoustic tracks and Dear Father. Letters Home is as emotional as lost ground lyrically and back to the basics musically. Great album.
