5.0 classic | Mr_Coffee | July 8th 09 | Your Favorite Weapon was Brand New's Pablo Honey, an average pop punk album with a few great songs. Deja Entendu was The Bends: it defined Brand New's sound with acoustic guitars involved, playing with emotion and making an overall outstanding record. The Devil and God are Rading Inside Me? Brand New's very own OK Computer. Enough said.

4.5 superb | AtavanHalen | October 27th 08 | The late comedian Bill Hicks once said of what made great music- "I want someone who plays from his fucking heart." With this definition in mind, one would be hard pressed to find one more fitting than singer-songwriter Jesse Lacey.
Alongside his band, Brand New, Lacey presents the listener with a defining album, complete with vented frustrations, paranoid questionings of faith, showing of scars and both the light and the dark of what a human can feel. Despite a slightly lacking second half and a superfluous reprise of highlight "Luca", this album's quality is at times overwhelming- this is some of the best music to be released in years.

But you felt the album inside you for years before it really came out. Even years after it came out you didn't truly recognize it. But now you do. And now you realize all those moments you spent singing along/shouting along/screaming along you were contributing something to the album posthoumously. And that is what music is about so keep doing that.

0.0 | MichaelJordan | May 1st 10 | I think I just went into this album with too high of expectations. The songwriting is pretty good, and the melodic elements are good also. I think it's just the pop-emoish vocals that still grate on me.
All right, though, I've come around a bit. This is a good album for what it is. There's no way I'm giving it higher than a 3 (2.8ish), and I still don't see what all the fuss is about, but it's not bad.

Forget the passion, the emotion, the sense of loss, the questions; when it all boils down to it, The Devil And God... reminds me of one very simple thing that is easy to forget: we're human.

4.5 superb | Knott- EMERITUS | March 13th 10 | I can't listen to this album without becoming depressed. Not just in a downbeat mood - depressed. It reminds me of the worst 3 months of my life by a long shot and I can't avoid that feeling. There's little doubt that this record could be perfect - I can't tell. It's raw, emotional, dynamic, dark, passionate, unpredictable and brilliantly constructed. I just think it should end after You Won't Know. Honestly, every time I listen to this album that song finishes and I can't be f**ked with the rest of it all. Up to there it's pretty much the most powerful thing ever. I'm rambling, I don't care. Album is, put simply, intense. Hear it.

0.0 | AXDS | May 12th 11 | Sometimes I wonder, "do I really have good taste in music?" Most albums that are praised as the best albums ever made never click with me, this album included. The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me sounds like nothing more than typical alternative rock/indie with some occasional good moments. It makes me wonder if people are simply influenced by others to choose what albums should be considered a classic. Is nostalgia a proper reason to call an album a masterpiece? Does growing up with an album make it instantly perfect regardless if its actually good or not? However, I must admit that I am also guilty of this. What should be considered a masterpiece, an album with great complexity unlike any other band, or an album in which you are deeply personally attached to? The world of music is a strange place.

They're maturity has increased the quality of music they bring while they still search for originality, only progressing further in their careers and increasing my appreciation. I feel the disease spreading a bit.

0.0 | EvilEyez | May 31st 16 | Brand New know how to make us feel brand new inside
This is a band I've carried on my sole a long time through every journey I've walked in my life. If there was one word I'd use to describe the devil and God (long title) it is 'brand new know how to make us feel brand new inside' and the band let there good sole out and it's pure. I wouldn't trust my worst enemy if he didn't like this one!
In the past Brand New were newer but their sole was older but now the age of the sole is the one for them and they (finally!) fit it perfect.
The theme of the album is there is the devil and a God and they live in Brand New and inside the fans and the universe to. This is the best theme of the best album would you need another?
I don't like the singing but I can ignore it. They may annoy but the music brings peas to my mind and turns my heart mushy again. When I joined Sputnik this was the first album I checked the rating and i agree. Classic.

4.5 superb | Jared Floryan | November 4th 14 | The boy who blocked his own shot used to be an astronaut. Three years later, he was stripped of his role as the one who ascends, and has since become a literal shadow of his former self. Brand New's third studio album introduces us to a more refined, darker band already coming to terms with our cruel reality. Even though The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me is slightly better than the previous release thematically, its musical charm is a bit uneasy at times, but one may look at this as adding onto the band's growth. Brand New's third full-length record is overestimated, yet rightfully so.

4.5 superb | NeutralThunder12 | December 31st 11 | Some of the strongest and most passionate music I;ve ever heard. The atmosphere, the lyrics and the vocals all come together to make a ridiculously consistent record that flows brilliantly. Jesse's melodies are amazing on here. While they may in a way rehash the same song formula throughout most of the record, its barely noticeable, and it works incredibly well. I know its like the sputnik way to just 5 this but its really grown to a point where I love every song, and I really find myself enamored with Jesse's lyrics however over emotional they may be. Album is awesome. oh if youre a teenager and your angsty and shit buy this or get it or something

4.5 superb | craigy2 | November 11th 10 | At school in English lessons we sat down and dissected poetry looking for hidden meanings and linking imagery from poem to poem...you could so easily do this with Brand New's 'The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me'. A rich, textured exploration of the psyche of a tortured man the lyrics are supported by heart-wrenching intrumentation that is fascinating in its own right. Whether it is the soul-crushing 'Welcome To Bangkok' or the haunting 'You Won't Know' TDAGARIM is an album where every lyric, every melody and every note weaves together to form a rich tapestry.

4.5 superb | Niceinvader | August 30th 09 | This album is a very strange one for me. At times when I listen to it, it flows so fluidly that it almost has a exposition, climax, and denouement like any good story or novel. Most of the time I can only see it as a collection of songs, nothing wrong with that though. Jesses lyrics are some of the most downright depressing and angst ridden of any brand new album and really fit in with the whole bipolar aspect. While no song is happy there are uptempo and danceable songs and then there are some slow burners. Not the sun and limousine being prime examples of the polarity. Musically, this album is the band progressing into darker areas, and i'm overexcited to see how dark daisy's progression will be from this. Lyrically though, I wanna hear another tommy gun.

4.0 excellent | Abdar112 | February 15th 07 | I thought this had much improvement from their previous CD's. Besides "The Quiet Things that No One Ever Knows" and "Good to Know That If I Ever Attention All I Have To Do is Die" I didn't really like Deja Entendu. I'm impressed with the first 6 tracks, my personal favorite is "Millstone" and another improvement was SHORTER SONG NAMES. Although there were a few flaws to this album. Almost all the songs start out slow and soft, then usually get heavy at the chorus, etc. but other than that i really liked this album, and i think this album should classify in the "Rock" genre, rather than "Pop Punk"

5.0 classic | britelinedeye | January 3rd 07 | This album is in my opinion the greatest of 2006. I was actually hesitant to get hear this album, but the first song pulled me in. The rest of the songs while at times melodic are very much rock. Also some of the songs actually change so much I almost felt I were listening to a new song. Point in case track # 5 "Limousine (SM Rebridge)". This actually helped this cd to differ from any other cd I have heard this year. I have to warn that if you are a Brand New Fan.. this album is different from previous albums they have produced. Yet.. just give this album a try you may be suprised like I was. This album has so much emotion and is beautiful. I recommend it.

This album is everything that makes the genre pushed to the max. The explosive production works really well, especially with the dark lyrics. And those lyrics are really excellent. The album tackles death, existentialism and religion in a really amazing way. If you should hear only one track on this album, it must be Limousine. It?s a chillingly morbid song based on a true story about a drunk driver hitting a limousine, killing a 7 year-old girl by doing so. If every song on the album floored me as much as this one, it?d be a 10. This album flows incredibly and I can clearly see why it?s up there.r

All in all this is a very well constructed indie emo idk what rock record that alternates between heaviness (1,4,6,7,9), catchiness (2,8,11), and emotion (the rest tbh) all throughout without it ever feeling erratic. The only construction gripe I have with this is that I wish it ended on 11 - the ballad on 12 albeit nice feels unnecessary. 5 feels like it drags a bit even though the track is good. Apart from those two and the interludey 10 maybe, every track is a hell of a jam. Songs I did not click too well with like 3 now feel sublime. Hey maybe I ll jam this in three years and it'll feel like a 5. For now, 4.35

I was browsing a music forum when I saw this creepy cover of a little girl hiding from two masked men on a front porch. That, along with the title of the record, sent my mind alive with stories and questions. Who were these characters and what did they mean in relation to the album's name? Who was the little girl? Was she God? Did the men represent the devil? I had to give it a listen straight away. What I experienced next was one of the most impactful first listens of any album I had ever heard. 4.5 superb | EcoChocolatacchi | January 7th 15 | this album suffers from "Shawshank Redemption Syndrome". Its had over the last 9 years a long history of absolute critical appraise from numerous outputs. That means many people are led towards listening to this album with the state of mind that they're getting a masterpiece, and will fight any negative emotions to sustain that image provided. On the contrary, dissenters will note the popularity and dismiss it, looking lonely and unguided with their "look at me" low ratings. This is an amazing album, which surely beats the sums of its parts as Jesse isn't exactly what I'd call a talented singer by any margin, and the instrumentals barely surpass the best high school bands. And speaking of high school, the oft celebrated lyrics relate more to high school melodrama from the forms of overt deep poems than many albums. So this sounds like a 2 so far? Brand New have an uncanny ability to understand how to format an album. On early listens it seems top heavy ...but repeat listens give light to songs such as "Limozeen", which doesn't overstay its welcome. It has questionable staying power, as the weak instrumentals don't benefit its already memorable hooks and verses. >somewhere between a 3.5 and a 4, this is it.

5.0 classic | VengeanceCactus | December 25th 14 | This album has received so much praise on this site, there's no need to reiterate just how emotionally powerful and resonant this record is, or how well written and cohesive it is. But something I feel is criminally overlooked is just how incredibly detailed and gorgeous the production is. Every single time I hear it I notice a little piece of sound I didn't pay attention to in previous listens. The huge, overblown loud-quiet-loud dynamic perfectly matches the dark and introspective lyrics and somber but energetic tone of the album. I couldn't imagine giving this less than a 5.

5.0 classic | SlowlyFallingAwake | November 30th 12 | So much has been said already about this record that I consider it quite problematic to add a new element to the afore-mentioned. TDAGARIM is a grower, most-likely the most determined fellow out there. It's been a couple of years since I've started listening and I keep on coming back to it, no matter what mood I'm in. A melancholic and/or discontent state of mind compliments this album very well in any case. I've grown up listening to this album; I've had the pleasure (or rather displeasure?) of going through every song at some point in my life, experiencing it in the flesh and afterwards rejoicing by listening. I've come to tears listening to it more times than I can count. It's a record defining broken people, the ones in seek of refuge but at home nowhere. The ones in search of rest, peace and quiet yet finding disillusionment, despair, melancholy and unfulfillment instead. It may well be the best record I have in my collection: no fillers, distinct character in each song, each song a grower and sublime. Incomparable to anything else I've ever encountered.

0.0 | Alondite | November 25th 12 | Brand New so genuinely pull off the melodrama that they seem to be completely ignorant of the fact. This isn't the most complex or technical album you're ever going to hear, far from it, in fact. What it does happen to be, is a demonstration of top-notch songwriting and genuinely emotional delivery. It's simple, but relatable, and t has the uncanny ability to draw you in, to create that emotional connection that makes it more than notes and words.

4.5 superb | happyfunball | October 31st 12 | While the songs on this album are well crafted and fantastic, I can't help but miss the energy on their previous efforts. I do think that Jesse Lacey's vocals are the best they've ever been, at times cutting through the melody like a knife with his forceful delivery on some of these tracks. Some of the most thoughtful words ever put to music are here for your enjoyment. This album can satisfy indie, emo, and alt rock fans alike.

5.0 classic | TheSupernatural | August 7th 12 | Would love to be able to put this on without having to skip Untitled each time
Bump |
5.0 classic | immortalizepain | August 5th 12 | Some will say that this album has a progressive mix to it, but who am I to disagree with them? Brand New has created a very dark yet still attractive album. Some may dislike this album because of the simple song structures but it is one reason why it still stands beyond passage of time, it has become familiar yet captivating at the same time.
Bump |
4.5 superb | VacantTool | June 24th 12 | The first half is a classic. Hard to finish an album after starting off with 4 songs that include some of their best work.
Bump |
5.0 classic | MouseMan | June 19th 12 | This guy's got a special place in my heart. Although looking in retrospect, Brand New's previous album was stellar, I really had no faith in these guys until I really sat down and took a listen to The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me. 10 seconds into the opener, "Sowing Season", you realize this shit is real, Jesse Lacey isn't singing about high school loves anymore. The thematic creativity of these songs give the album a genuine flow, and after listening to the deep personal lyrics throughout the whole album, you walk away with the sense you've just had a conversation with Jesse.
Bump |
5.0 classic | Bhawd | June 5th 12 | Excellent. One of the best albums I have ever heard
Bump |
5.0 classic | Dashy | June 2nd 12 | With this release Brand New cemented themselves as one of my favorite artists. From the stellar the beginning of the album to the underrated second half, I can find almost no flaws in this. This album truly deserves all of the attention it gets.

0.0 | Gwynbleiddsfang | May 20th 12 | i was almost 100% sure this album wouldn't live up to the hype(for me, anyway), it has WAY too much, But damn.... it actually did it. Normally it would be a bit harsh to classify with a 5 an album i listened to very recently, but in my mind a 5 is: 1)just really, really, really, REALLY good music(obviously), 2) an album that gives me a strong emotion and/or captures me in it's atmosphere/histories, and 3)an album i want to keep listening over and over, and i will continue doing so for the years to come. This album is all 3.

4.5 superb | Mojito | April 28th 12 | The one album that is impossible to escape on Sputnikmusic and for pretty good reason. Damn consistent throughout with a few notable standouts (Holy fucking Degausser). Brilliant lyrics. solid instrumentation and dem vocals - all makes it a fantastic album. Listen to it before you die son.

When it isn't, it's an album filled with emotion and topped off with lots of fun. The music here is purely essential for any fan of alternative indie / post hardcore. Now please, be quiet, and listen to the stories Brand New have for you...

0.0 | | February 3rd 12 | Deftly leaping between unreal quantities of human emotion, Brand New have created an album that creates timeless memories, takes you on a journey through the ventricles of the sub-conscience. This is only further propelled by the fantastic atmosphere, beautiful fretwork, absolutely stunning composition and new and unique perspectives.

5.0 classic | afergusonart | November 20th 11 | The most emotional album I've ever heard, it connects with me on so many levels. While I'd first heard a few songs from this album a year or two ago and paid no mind to them, I eventually found myself listening to the full album some time later, and it's been one of my favorites ever since.

5.0 classic | TheBuzzKiller | November 16th 11 | Thank you sputnik, without you I would have never found this album. One of my favourites of all time and an album that grew on me and grew on me. What makes this album fantastic are all the layers it has, layers of instruments, layers of vocals, and basically layers and layers of emotion. This album shines out as the best amongst Brand New's great discography.
Bump |
5.0 classic | IfYouRun | October 13th 11 | Less immediate than its predecessors, TDAGARIM is a great album combining elements of hardcore, emo, pop-punk and indie, and throwing in a mightily big Morrisey influence lyrics wise. Worth checking out if you are a fan of the afore mentioned genre's.

4.0 excellent | drumasster | September 24th 11 | I enjoy this album best listening to it drunk. And that's saying more than it sounds like. It's still not all people crack it up to be on this site. But it's not bad, and has its epic, poignant moments.

5.0 classic | Crymsonblaze | July 14th 11 | Some albums grow on you and some albums hit you hard on the first go. This is both. It's a demanding album that rarely lets up its unrelenting wave of depression and doubt, with countless moments of catharsis along the way. Jesse's tortured shouts make the album, cutting deep to the center of the soul. Just try to listen to "You Won't Know"'s thunderous chorus without getting chills. I dare you.

Bump |
5.0 classic | vmcoia91 | December 9th 10 | One of the most important albums all time for me. I don't think I have ever been more emotionally connected with an album than this one. Every word sung by Jesse Lacey on this brilliant album means so much to me. I, like Lacey, have had my troubles in life and I feel that because of those experiences I am a better person for it. What I like most about this album is that the protagonist of each song is not asking for forgiveness or making excuses for their actions in the past. They are pouring their heart and soul out and explaining their actions for what they have done. Limousine remains one of the most haunting songs of all time as it based on the tragic story of 7 year old Katie Flynn's death. I cannot think of a single second on this album that I don't enjoy. Everything flows together perfectly on this masterpiece and I cannot think of any other band writing lyrics as brilliantly as Lacey and his band mates on The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me.

4.0 excellent | Douglas | October 21st 09 | There really isn't much wrong with this record. The soaring melodies, they punchy bridges, the variance in styles or just the pure emotion coming from the band. The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me is one of those records that hit close to home and bring roar emotion from band to listener.

5.0 classic | scotish | October 5th 09 | A word to those that may initially be put off as I was by the creepiness, both generally and especially in the lyrics; persist. It helps to think of some of the shorter tracks, such as "Welcome to Bangkok" as not so much songs in themselves, but connectors, plot devices of sort (not to play down how good they are). Yes, it's hard to see through the offputting stuff initially, but once you get over that, you realise just how gloriously good this is; it is very much worth it.

"Sowing Season," "Jesus Christ," and "Limousine" are standout tracks.

4.0 excellent | xs1n1sterx | July 14th 08 | Originally after getting this album it was my least favorite of the 3 Brand New albums. I believe this album takes some time to grow on you, because after learning the quiet and subtle background vocals it adds a new element to the songs. The only thing holding this album back from a 5 is the two instrumental songs. The album doesn't seem to get old.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | rentford | October 31st 07 | I can honestly say that i didn't expect something like this to come from Brand New. TDAGARIM shows a lot of growth and maturity in the band since the days of Your Favorite Weapon.
Jesse writes some really heartfelt lyrics this time around, and with songs like "Jesus Christ" it's safe to say that Brand New can be finally be taken seriously. In terms of instrumentation, the change can be likened to that of TBS' Louder Now. Of course, the main diffrence being that while they both reflect more of a rock element in their music, Louder Now is nothing but a let down unlike TDAGARIM. For people that may have been turned off by Brand New's previously pop-punk dominated sound, this is an album to get. All in all another terrific album from Brand New.

3.0 good | iamMALAISE | December 29th 06 | The first time I listened to this album, I was very unimpressed. The songs have little variation from one another, and the songs that do sound different from everything else don't sound very good. I thought maybe after a few more listens that my opinion might change but that did not happen. The only songs that I think are better than average are "Jesus Christ" and "Handcuffs." The song everyone is buzzing about, "Not The Sun," is "Not Very Good," at all. Overly-repetitious and annoying are the only adjectives I can think of to describe it. I liked a lot of older Brand New songs but this CD is sub-par at best. Maybe if I can find a way to listen to it a few more times, my opinion will change but that's very doubtful. Plus, I don't know how I can possibly listen to this again.
PROS:
"Jesus Christ", "Handcuffs"
CONS:
Everything else with the exception of "Luca (Reprise)" which is average. May even join the PRO side of this CD if I do listen to it more.
Also I'm amazed at the number of people who give this CD a "classic" rating. This CD is absolutely not a classic. I can see how some people may like this CD even though I don't but classic is definitely not a synonym for this one.
***EDIT***
After listening to the songs on this album a few more times, I've bumped it up from a 2 to a 3, but i'm still not extremely impressed.
