In their sophomore release, The Mayan Factor decided to concentrate more on the alternative aspect of their music and limit the prog/folk elements found in their debut. Consequently, the tribal ambiance and the originality of their sound are lost. However, the result delivered in 44 is equally great, if not more stunning at times. Similar to the debut, 44 opens with a dynamic opener and its contagious chorus 'stop digging in my grave' immediately attracts the listener. With similar energy but more aggression, the follow-up 'Terorrist' is one of the album's highlights. A notable difference from In Lake' Ch is that the band has worked its calmer moments by adding more melody. Personally, the tracks falling into this category mark my favorite moments, with 'Gosia' being the jewel in the crown. In terms of music, once again Ray-Ray is the point of reference. His vocals remain clean and intense at times, but there is not much anger. They set the tone and guide the band with the rest of the instruments following rdevotely. Recommendations: "Gosia", "Terrorist", "Hopi Elders", "Jack Nicholson", "To Kill a Priest".

(9/12/15) Re-listening to a few prior rated albums, and will admit this album has lost it's touch... The first track is reminiscent of it's first album, but tracks 2-4 are very mediocre compared to rest of the album, and upon hearing them back to back makes this album's appeal come to a screeching halt. I know this album has good qualities, yet the vocals feel hesitant to "sing" on this record.

An art rock group from Baltimore, The Mayan Factor have an ethnic sound, using atmospheric percussion (kongas and drums), acoustic guitars, various keyboard samples and tribal bass to an melodic, intense effect. The Mayan Factor could equally be called progressive rock as they could be lumped into the space rock category, one thing setting them apart from most artists in these genres is that the vocalist raps on occasion. Don't let this deter you, because it's an altogether interesting and one of a kind experience.

This is one of those albums that takes the listener by surprise and keeps you wanting more. From the opening track, "To Kill a Priest", to the closing track, "Self Storage", I was blown away. "Jack Nicholson" is a tragically depressed, and mind blowing track that gave me chills throughout. In fact, almost every song on this album gave me chills, which is very rare for me nowadays. The Mayan Factor is a severely underrated band, or maybe it is that they are unheard of, but in any case, I am deeply saddened that they are no longer making music. It is rare for me to give an album a 5/5, but to me, 44 is a classic that I will be listening to for as long as I live.
