Whereas the rest of The Cure's albums felt very deep in a certain style, their self-titled feels like it's meshing together to create a weird mesh. Throughout the whole record, I had the feeling that Trent Reznor produced the record, because the end-result is a mix of electronics and metal, without the ambient of their earlier production. Definitely one of the weaker records in their discog.

The Cure's take on heavy metal. I didn't like this album much at first, but it grew on me. I appreciate the intensity in Smith's voice on tracks like "Lost," "Us Or Them," and "The Promise."

'The Cure' was one of the quickest recordings in the band's history, and it seems to have had an adverse effect on the sound of the album. It sounds carefree, relaxed and comfortable in its own skin, and it's nice to see a set of songs that haven't been fussed over too much. Having said that, nothing here is all that compelling; it's simply a middle-of-the-road Cure album, best suited to more serious fans than casual admirers.r
