| 4.5 superb | Rail | April 15th 13 | For me, that blood-curdling wail near the end of Brute distils the ethos of Colin Stetson: Does the sound come from man or instrument? Is it even correct to assume that those two are still mutually exclusive things? All I know is that from that moment on, my hitherto passive listening experience was changed. You gripped me by the perineum, Colin. You gripped me hard. And I liked it.

| 4.1 excellent | Erwann S. EMERITUS | March 30th 22 | The sax still is haunting with Colin Stetson, but this time Justin Vernon lends his soft voice to reshape the atmosphere. It's a matter of loops, both the voice as well the saxo repeating mantras. It starts with the album's most frightening moments ("Hunted" wtf yes, "Brute" wtf Justin Vernon growls yes), to conclude on - almost - cathartic notes. Fuckin' based.

| 3.0 good | EasterInTheBatcave | June 9th 16 | I have mixed feelings about Justin Vernon's vocals on here- they don't always fit and they, overall, aren't as impressive as Laurie Anderson and Shara Worden's work on Vol. 2. However, he does have his moments, and luckily Colin Stetson's playing on here is just as amazing as ever. Indeed, "Hunted" is an instrumental and one of the best songs on the record-- it wouldn't have felt out of place on Vol. 2-- and the title track is a fifteen-minute, epic journey. All in all, this record is not as good as Vol. 2-- due partly to the aforementioned vocals, and also to a few less interesting numbers-- but it's still worth hearing.

| 4.5 superb | Lani | April 28th 13 | Given how some people I know talk about Colin Stetson, I was not expecting to like this. I expected to be minimalistic traditional sax playing. This is full of weird sounds and the usage of his sax to make shrill, tense and threatening tones. Not to mention that several moments on here (such as "Among the Sef") are strangely accessible. Favored track: "Brute", "And in Truth", "High above a Grey Green Sea", "In Mirrors", "Among the Sef (Righteous, Pt. 2)", "To see more Light", "Part of Me Apart from You".

imploded into one mediocre album.
