I would say being one of the biggest influences on an entire genre and subgenres springing from it earns you a 5. Everywhere you look, you can hear the spirit of this bands music influencing and inspiring melodic death metal bands, and any genre that melodic death has touched.

Heartwork has a reputation of being one of the greatest melodic death metal albums of all time. True or not, all I can say is that I can't agree with that reputation. Heartwork actually has a unique sound and it really stands out compared to many other melodic death metal albums but I can't enjoy this album. The only tracks that melt my face are Arbeit Macht Fleisch, Heartwork and Death Certificate. Particularly Death Certificate, I have never encountered such awesome riff work before, a truly amazing track. The rest of the tracks do not impress me much, I don't want to say this but I think that Heartwork is quite bland and boring. It is not an utterly terrible album but it is not as utterly great either.

What more has to be said about Heartwork that hasn't already been mentioned before? Not only is it one of the defining releases of the melodic death metal style, it also just so happens to be one of the finest albums in this subgenre. British metal band Carcass unveiled a rampaging demon of a full-length back in the year 1993, and I'm sure that it won't wear out its welcome even in the future. The album strikes a most pleasurable compromise, all while providing voracious guitar riffs and leads, earth-splitting vocals, and a solid production job courtesy of Colin Richardson. No song on here can be disregarded and the general pacing of this LP is just right. Believe the hype that engulfs Carcass' fourth studio offering.

An exceedingly good slab of melodeath that does what so much in the genre fails to do-properly integrate the melodic side into their music and still maintain a crushingly heavy sound. This stands out to me as one of the best the genre has ever, or probably will ever, produce.

Metal legends Carcass were arguably at the top of their game when Heartwork was released. Almost every aspect of the album is flawless, and is a major step up from Carcass' previous work, which was none too shabby either. The guitars are much more melodic than they were on previous releases, but still aggressive and technical. The vocals are very good as well, they are consistant throughout the entire album, but may become a but monotonous at point. They do not however, drag the album down at all, so it's no really a problem. The drumming is a nice blend of simple 4/4 beats and fast intricate beats with nice footwork. Carcass' Heartwork may very well be their best album, and if not it is certainly their most mature. Very well done, almost a definite to please any metal fan.

Carcass' opus among a fair number of their musical accomplishments. Track after track after track, Carcass doesn't fail to impress with their heavy hitting, old-fashioned, catchy, melody-driven death metal riffs that they are definitive pioneers of. This is an example of a a metal record perfected and a style improved upon (much more notably so, given that they kind of let go of their whole goregrind motif for this one)

On Necroticism Carcass saw the addition of Michael Amott. Greatly improved in both songwriting and the guitar-playing, it also marked their full transition into pure Death Metal. Then comes Heartwork. Not stopping at pure DM, they pioneer their second genre, Melodic Death Metal. The first album to don the melo-death tag is a good one, but not very much by today?s standard.

Is there such a thing as a perfectly balanced metal album? I think there is, and it is Heartwork. A lot of people don't realize it, but there really is an incredible amount of variation in the Metal genre. Fast and slow, heavy and light, dark and uplifting, and everything in between. There are genres for your preference and amazing albums in practically every style. Carcass did the unthinkable and made an album that, in my opinion, accentuates the positives of all the sub-genres of metal and displays it in thoughtful brevity. Yes, this is technically the first Melodeath album, but it really doesn't sound like other Melodeath albums. Give it a listen or two and you'll understand that there is everything a metal enthusiast could hope for here: catchiness, aggressiveness, progressive elements, and beautiful solos. I'd argue that even the vocals fill this "every-style" role perfectly by filling in the space between coherent singing and brutal growling. All the features are displayed just as much as they need to and nothing is overdone. I'll end the ramble with this: even though I think this album can stand up to the very best in all metal styles, it doesn't evoke the sense of needing to compete and instead exists almost as a celebration of the genre. The wide-open arms on the cover say "welcome listener, welcome to metal."

Wake up and smell a classic! 1993. Carcass unleashed a record exploding with great riffs and leads and an memorable caracteristic vocal delivery by Walker. Sheer brutality, speed and melody is all delivered here wrapped under crushing harmonized guitar. And oh wait, the production is perfect cause it's 1993.

An amazing slab of melodeath that never fails to amaze me with its interweaving guitar melodies that work so well among the brutality on display in the riffs and the vocal performance is arguably the best in melodeath and shows rubbish melodeath bands like Arch Enemy how the genre should be handled. This is a fantastic release that everyone into extreme metal should check out.

Can someone say this was pioneering and history-making? Fuck yeah!! Can someone say it's good? Fuck yeah!! Can someone say it's the best fuckin' album out there and everybody should bow down to it? Fuck no!! The album is great. However, the album is a great prototype for melodic death metal, not necessarily a classic, or Carcass's best work.
