Basically my favorite Final Fantasy. Some critics have given it unfavorable reviews
(relatively speaking, for a Uematsu composition). I disagree wholeheartedly. The main theme
of "Melody of Life" is not the greatest song (kind of sounds like a J-Pop ballad or
something), but its echoing in various places (e.g., the field map song) is nicely done. The
songs really compliment the mood of the game. Hell, I can argue that "You're Not Alone"
singlehandedly gives the scene in Pandemonium its emotional tug. Likewise, Beatrix's Theme
really conveyed her mixed feelings towards her duties and what she really should be doing.
For the classically-trained instrumentalists, it's pretty cool how Uematsu incorporates Les
Folies d'Espagne/ La Folia (depending on the composer) from the Baroque period into songs
such as "Vamo Alla Flamenco" and "Black Mage Village." The Boss Battle Theme is the most
adrenaline-pumping song I've personally heard in a video game, and even the battle theme was
quite good, getting stale only after a few hundred listens. All in all, awesome soundtrack
to an awesome game.
