Powerful and almost completely lived-in. This album has tonal issues, but the themes of desperation and weariness universally make up for them. "Gimme Shelter" is emphatically emotive and simply demands attention. Beautifully complex song. Still gives me chills. "Love in Vain" is a superb blues cover and the band's interpretation is quite powerful yet remaining reverential. "Country Honk" completely distracts from the powerful themes set forth in the previous two songs. A complete dud; horrible choice to include it in this album. "Live With Me" is only above average; it rocks slightly, and is fun; however, misplaced in this album. However the incongruity innate in this song makes it quite interesting to listen to. "Let It Bleed" is darkly perverse and twisted; and it helps that it rocks fucking hard! Stellar title track. Following with themes of desperation, perverseness and wickedness is "Midnight Rambler". Haunting. "You Got the Silver" is such a lovely vocal performance from Richards; heart-wrenching. "Monkey Man" is simply fun, if not too silly. Not sure how I feel about the song on this album; perhaps a dud-- perhaps not. Lastly is the exceptional, "You Can't Always Get What You Want". Broodingly complex. An almost stellar album, but powerful nonetheless. Tighter and more focused than "Exile On Main Street", "Beggars Banquet" and "Sticky Fingers". Ar- Zach

Just as their friendly rivals The Beatles were announcing their breakup, the Rolling Stones had finally solved their
identity crisis. During their formative years with original guitarist Brian Jones & manager Andrew Loog Oldham, the
band had struggled and experimented with various musical genres, but weren't always consistently great songwriters. The
results could vary between brilliant, decent and just plain mediocre. LET IT BLEED finds the Stones have finally
assimilated their blues, country & early rock and roll influences and were now blending them in their own unique and
special way. Their mastery is so refined that it is very difficult to decide whether some of these songs contain more
of one style than another. Every song here is amazing and there is no mediocrity to be found. This is when the
Rolling Stones truly became the band that we know and love today.
Highlights: "Gimme Shelter", "Love In Vain", "Live With Me", "Midnight Rambler", "Monkey Man" and "You Can't Always Get
What You Want".

"Gimme Shelter" is four and a half minutes of pure perfection, foreboding and rocking and soulful and absolutely brilliant. "You Can't Always Get What You Want" is another staple of classic rock radio and is, thus, overplayed; its direct message and gradual arrangement never really struck a chord with me, but I can see its worth. Tracks 2-8 continue the country blues experiment begun on Beggars' Banquet in fine fashion, with each song (including a more honky-tonk re-working of old hit "Honky-Tonk Woman") rife with emotion and authenticity.

The Stones' greatest albums - 'Exile', 'Sticky Fingers' and 'Ya-Yas' - marry their blues origins to an original, biting rock n roll sound. Here, they are too often heavily indebted to their influences ('Love In Vain', 'You Got The Silver') or else gross imitations of their genres. 'Country Honk', lads? Seriously?

A brilliant album beginning to end. Songs like "Love In Vain", "Midnight Rambler" and "Live With Me" are perfect examples of how The Rolling Stones can create both intense songs with their own individual significance, but can also have a great flow throughout the album. The songs such a "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and "Gimme Shelter" are The Stones at their finest.
