Definitely a grower, Red House Painters II went from being my least favorite Mark Kozelek release all-around to my second favorite. Take its predecessor Red House Painters I, push it to bleaker extremes, add a healthy dose of Slint influence, and there you have this album. While the ending rendition of Star Spangled Banner is kind of lame, every other track is gold. "Evil" is quite frankly the most aptly titled song ever. "Blindfold" might be the best track in RHP's entire repertoire, featuring the only scream you'll hear Mark shriek on record (and it's a great one at that). An underrated gem of Kozelek's vast and growing discography.
