Back when I was 13, Red Hot Chili Peppers' Greatest Hits pretty much changed my outlook on music. It was the first album that I truly loved, not because it was popular or charted well, I just simply enjoyed it. Since then I've gone on to discover much heavier, obscure, progressive, advanced, emotional, and technical music that by all means is probably on par or even better than this. However, this gets that extra push up, because I know that if I hadn't had heard it then I wouldn't like the music I like today. And for that I will always love it.

A suitable collection for casual fans of the band. Whether this is truly their "greatest" material I don't know, but it's got many of the most recognizeable radio hits from the 90s and early 00s (their commercial golden age). On first play I'd only heard half of these songs before, but the others are mostly okay (with "Parallel Universe" an obvious standout). As someone who's tried and failed to get into their LPs, I can say I'm satisfied with this record.

Red Hot Chili Peppers' Greatest Hits is an ideal package for newcomers to the band, and is obviously aimed at the mainstream audience. It doesn't span their early, pre-Mother's Milk-era, it contains only the more popular and accessible material from Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and most songs are from their, in the big audience's eye magnum opus Californication. It's exactly what can be expected of a compilation album created after By The Way, and remains a just about perfect overview of the band's more commercial work.
