1.0 awful | Shadows | October 10th 06 | The Crusade runs invariably dry on memorable content just as quickly as the album starts. The only songs that actually stick out for positive reasons are To the Rats and Tread the Floods, both of which feature sufficiently interesting riffs. That is, until once again, the music is flooded with derivative Metallca riffs and melodies, so much so that the listener is virtually beaten aurally until the decent riffs are completely forgotten. It almost sounds as if Trivium was desperate to write a long instrumental song, as The Crusade features dozens of completely unrelated riffs thrown together in a rather haphazard manner. While perhaps good in very small doses, The Crusade is not at all the technical thrash metal masterpiece that media sources hailed it.

3.5 great | Huber | October 11th 06 | The Crusade isn't original by any means. Trivium show on this album a very Metallica like sound. It doesn't have to be a bad thing however. Trivium still have some good solos, and there halftime catchy choruses, this tme with better riffage, and Hetfield like vocals replacing the screams. Some songs are also very sleazy sounding showing the influence of Paulo in the song writing on this record. I think this was an improvement for Trivium. Do your best to ignore the media and hype and give this album a go.

5.0 classic | Yimmypalooza | January 1st 07 | First of all I think this album is a five because in my personal collection it is my favorite and in my opinion the best album I own. And all of you who think Heafy just randomly decided to start singing it wasn't so random. Heafy wanted to start singing because he felt like the screaming wasn't easy to understand, which i actually agree with, and decided to go with a different feel. I think if they continued the screaming than it would just sound the same as their other cd's. Also for everyone who is trying to say the entire album is a carbon copy of Metallica if you really listened to it without a one-dimensional point of view you would realize that only certain parts sound like Metallica. I can see the similarities with the vocals but i don't think they are as dramatic as everyone makes them out to be. I can't really pick out a standout on the cd because i think they are all incredibly good but if I had to recommend a song I would say listen to Anthem (We Are The Fire), its very catchy with some kick ass solos. The only real weak song i would say is This World Can't Tear Us Apart.

5.0 classic | RadD | December 1st 06 | How can some body rate these guys a 1 at least give them a damn 4. Just because the band doesn't want to scream and sing like little pussy biches anymore, (ya thats right i said pussy little biches) its for the better. Come on think nobody can be what Metallica was, and in my opinion these guys were really tring to hard to be something there not. Come on an Asian screaming........just dont go along (and im Asian, no lie). What I am trying to get acrossed is that screaming is out deep distored singing is in. So dont be saying that these guys new album sucked, because the the truth is the guitar has goten better, the harmonizing has got great, and the vocals rock..............so just let these guy sing and play how they want to, with out so called fans discrediting them.

1.5 very poor | clairvoyant | January 10th 07 | To be completely honest I feel like that the guys in Trivium could have put out a great album, but they tried way too hard to make it the next "Master of Puppets". Now, I am not going to claim that it sounds too much like Metallica, because I honestly think it doesn't. But they tried to make the PERFECT metal album, and failed.
Most of the songs have plenty of potential, especially Entrance of the Conflagration, the prechorus is one of the best parts of the whole album. Detonation isn't too bad, and neither is Tread the Floods. I actually quite like the title track. But there are some songs that are atrocious, such as Becoming the Dragon, Contempt Breeds Contamination and Unrepentant. Those songs are simply awful. Other songs are ruined by stupid Matt Heafy-isms or excessive flat 5th's and flat 7th's.
Maybe next album they will tone down some and produce some quality music.

5.0 classic | Vosfox | December 2nd 06 | Excellent Album, awesome hard guitar riffs and meaningful solos mixed in with vocals that drive the emotion home. The drumming is well implemented, as is the bass, and you can pick out the bass in many songs. Favorites:And Sadness Will Sear, Becoming the Dragon, Entrance Of the Conflagration, Contempt Breeds Contamination. Must have for any rock or metal fan.

0.0 | | July 24th 08 | ok wtf why the fuk r dikheads saying that trivium sound exactly like metallica, grow sum balls, they fukin don't, i neva knew metallica did kik ass sweeping solos on dean razorbacks and nothin croses my mind of metallica screaming, last time i recalled this was a band called trivium and you fukheads need to get ur heads out ur cunts and actually relise this, ok now onto the album. Yes i believe that this is triviums "weakest" album compared to Ascendancy and Ember to Inferno, but maybe because trivium have gone to a whole new level, well levels not the right word, i'll just call it, curiosity, yeh that works i guess, these guys were curious to see what kind of repsonce they'd get if they changed tactics and went from solid throbbing screaming and heavy metalcore-ish riffs, into a softer but yet still kik ass clean singing, political sorta of heavy metal stand, and i think these guys did a resinable job for guys aged 22-25 and willing to try sumthing different and not curdle in their shells and release the same record over and over again. The solos r majorly kik ass (better than the ascendancy solos in a way i think) the songs have taken a new point of view and it worked out great. Only bad track is "The Rising" which is a bit boring if i say so myself,
Standout tracks: Ignition, Becoming the dragon, Entrance of the Conflagration, The Crusade,And sadness will sear and To the rats

4.5 superb | MikE451 | November 9th 06 | ok first of course it is very different from there perivous albums but still think of it like this if they would have made the crusade like the ascendancy album(screaming) than every album they would make in the future would be the same old stuff and sound the same .. to me they made a great move not screaming ..and to all the people who dont like trivium anymore because of there non screaming you were never fans of them if you were you would still like there new way

3.5 great | Alcatraz | December 4th 06 | Yes, it's unoriginal, and done before, but Trivium manage to pull it off again. The Crusade, although it lacks any innovative and fresh material, is still a good album. "Tread The Floods" is the unexpected highlight for me. The riffs are solid and chunky, and they interchange melodic moments and screaming verses very smoothly. The production is great, and no matter what people say, it's a good album. The one flaw is the length of the songs, as many listeners will lose interest after four or five minutes. Some good ideas, but left to run on too long, although nevertheless Trivium show the reason why they're widely renowned as the best new metal band in the world.

3.0 good | Bfhurricane | December 2nd 06 | I only have a few important words to say about this album.
If no one has ever heard previous Trivium, or any Metallica, the average rating would be higher. Much higher. If Metallica released this same album, it would have a pretty high rating. Unorginality has become too much of a factor. I still find this pleasing to my ears, and I don't see why I shouldn't judge the music by the music I hear.

Intrumentally its way better then the others, but not so good lyrically. At least matt had the balls to stop the screaming and still be metal.

0.0 | Passname | November 14th 10 | In the summer of 2009, a friend showed be "The Crusade". I had heard of Trivium, but didn't like them, the music was simply too heavy for me. That quickly changed. At the time I was listening to every cliche metalcore band in the book, but after discovering the best band in the genre, I focused on this album and this only album for months. "Detonation" is the song that changed my life, the one that made me want to study composition, and the one that got me into this band specifically. When experimental metalcore led to straight up thrash, "The Crusade" is a masterpiece that influenced my musicianship more than any other record. A fucking 57 minute musical journey.

4.5 superb | Crimson Death | February 17th 10 | As a matter of fact, there are 4 superficial facial bones (not including pairs). That would be the Zygomatic, Nasal, Maxilla and Mandible. There are other deeper facial bones such as the Vomer, Inferior Nasal Concha, Lacrimal...etc. Anyhow, this album starts off with "Ignition" which repeatedly changes time signatures and the song eventually works up to a catchy chorus. The combination of clean vocals and technical riffs/solos make this an enjoyable album. This album should not be passed off as a "Metallica clone" or "Mainstream Rock", surely any guitar player has to appreciate the technical aspects of this album.

0.0 | zulop | February 26th 08 | My ears bled with this, and not the "wow this is awesome!" bleeding, but the "no way can anyone enjoy this, not even the prepubescant fanboys of Ascendancy!" bleeding. Terrible album for fake metal buzzband teenagers.
If Trivium were to adopt such a strong Metallica style, the least they could do is root themselves in it and use their own potential that was overshadowed in Ascendancy to produce some good music, but instead it seems the band traded that potential for a very damaged second-hand Matt Hettfield vocal style.

5.0 classic | Wrathchild222 | July 19th 07 | I don't see how people could hate this album. If you are into True Metal (Metal that isn't Alternative Metal, Metalcore, Nu Metal, or Punk Metal) like me you are happy that there are no or very little screaming vocals. Which is a major improvment. Their riffs, solos, and drumming have improved.
If you didn't know, the guys of Trivium don't like the screaming vocals. Never have, never will.
Now you maybe asking yourself "if they hate screaming then why did they do it?"
My best guess is that they were experimenting. You know a band trying to find there own sound.
I find The Crusade to be what they will sound like for years to come.
If you don't like it, then stop listening.

2.0 poor | Slaytan | May 26th 07 | Trivium's most recent major label release, The Crusade was being hyped as an album full of complex guitar riffs and bass/drum rhythms that would be sure to keep it's listener in awe. Well guess what? This album delivers none of the above. Many of the songs have the same recycled riffs, and this time not even the solos can save the songs from drifting off into mediocrity. The vocals have also changed, I won't say they are bad, but Matt Heafy no longer screams, and instead has more of an aggressive clean vocal style. The lyrics on The Crusade are also horrible; songs like And Sadness Will Sear and Contempt Breeds Contamination sport the worst lyrics on the album, and only add to the growing suspicion that Matt Heafy can't write decent lyrics to save his life. The drumming on the album is mediocre, although Travis' talent is fairly evitable on songs like To the Rats, he makes little use of it, and constantly plays simple 4/4 beas over a rolling double bass. The bass isn't much better, for the most part Paulo just locks up with Matt and Corey to create a rather uninteresting and dull wall of sound. Corey does much of the same as Matt, create uninteresting riffs and solos, nothing more, and nothing less. From what I can hear off The Crusade, it doesn't sound like Trivium will be the next Metallica, but they have a great shot at matching Jethro Tull. Standout tracks: To The Rats, Treading the Floods Below Average Tracks: The Crusade, Ignition, Detonation, And Sadness Will Sear, Contempt Breeds Contamination

1.0 awful | joey2828 | January 22nd 07 | It's fun to hate this band. You know it is. C'mon, admit it. You know you love hating Trivium. It's cool. It's "in". I'm not hating this album to be cool and hip though. This album really does suck. Yes, it sucks. Giving this a 5 is like giving a Bon Jovi album a 1.5. 3.0 good | Jehuty16 | October 13th 06 | I dont know why everyone is saying The Crusade is "Mediocre" and "a horrible letdown." I love Trivium and i think Ascendancy is an amazing album, and even though Matt Heafy ditched the screaming that i was so fond of, The Crusade contains some really great songs. Anthem (We are the Fire) is a great song and most people just know Matt Heafy doesnt scream and they make up thier mind about the album before even listening to it.
Even though i really liked this album, it's not the next Master of Puppets. Too many of the songs sound alike and The Crusade is too repetative and i usually lose intrest around the 4:30 mark. Matt Heafy sounds a little too much like his idol, James Hetfield, which isnt a bad thing, but isn't original either. And i really never picked up on this until my friend, Andrew, mentioned it, but the opening riff from Unrependant sounds wayyy too much like Metallica's Through the Never.
Overall, i really liked half of the album and it's only about $10 so give Trivium a try.

2.5 average | Pebster49 | October 13th 06 | This album is good but nothing great thanks to Matt Heafy's vocals in which sound a lot like Metallica's Singer but try's way too hard to pull it off. With that said the solos and some songs are really awesome, just lacks the consistancy of the their previous albums. The real problem happens when they try to push a chourus that just don't sound right or fit with the song and Matt drags his vocals. Never the less if you can get over the vocals its a good cd. Just disappointing

2.0 poor | Blud Vidal | April 13th 20 | Without mentioning the big M this is certainly Trivium's worst effort. There is little of redeeming value here to this day. Trivium were confused and misguided; you can tell they have some musical talent but it's really not on display.

3.0 good | Michael Davis | November 15th 18 | Although some songs are directionless (looking at you "The Rising", although you're a fun track

Entrance being one of my favourite Trivium songs.

2.5 average | Xenorazr | November 27th 17 | A side-step from Ascendancy; a slightly different direction with much of the same results. Little of the grit has been retained, and while the sound has been smoothed out, it doesn't necessarily translate to a better album. The Crusade is, once again, held back by its elongated and undeserved length, it's in dire need of a focus and greater injection of energy.

3.5 great | MegaTechPC | June 2nd 16 | The Crusade has always received what I feel is undeserved hate from the usual suspects who hate on everything this band does anyway. Ignition and Detonation are probably the best two song opener of any of their albums and even the Motley Crue-esque Anthem is a really fun song. The cringeworthy This World Can't Tear Us Apart is the major low point and there are sprinklings of mediocrity here and there but the high points (like Tread the Floods and the aforementioned openenig duo) are really superb and shouldn't be simply dismissed by mindless group think. Heafy's vox are a concern on this record to be sure but he has gotten much better since 2006. Everything else on The Crusade is typical Trivium: Tight, melodic, riffy, and heavy. Beau lieu and Heafy's remain among the most talented guitar duos around today and Travis was fantastic as usual (they are really missing him these days). Definitely warrants a 3.5 rating.

3.0 good | tom6 | August 20th 11 | Matt Heafy really isn't a great vocalist, and if I had been a Trivium fan during this stage in their career, I'd have wondered why they bother writing subpar verse riffs just to have singing over them. Because they can write awesome riffs - Tread the Floods, To The Rats, Contempt Breeds Contamination and the juggernaut title track contain quite a few of those. Yet Trivium insistently attempt to be catchy and commercial, and the result is derivative, oversimplified metal, weak vocal hooks and frankly terrible lyrics. The fact that the instrumental album closer works so incredibly well and stands so high above every other track says everything about The Crusade.
Bump |
2.5 average | gravediggerfuneral | August 3rd 11 | The major problem with this album is that Trivium is trying to be Metallica so badly, and it's so obvious, that they've sacrificed aspects of their music that shined on their previous releases, such as harsh vocals and more technical guitars.

3.0 good | CutMan | February 17th 10 | It has it's shining moments, and I had a lot of hope for this album, but despite a thrill from first listening to it, it doesn't have a lot to offer. I think the main issue with the album is that it was a forced affair, they wanted to be purely thrash, so it came out artificial. They're better when they just let their influences flow, and I believe that is what they've begun to do as of Shogun.

0.0 | Motiv3 | March 28th 09 | Before this album i was a big Trivium fan, and at first i didnt think this album was that bad, but this album is seriously bland, repititive and at times tedious. The solos seem to be technical at the sake of being technical, theres no emotion shown in the solos like shown in ascendancy, one of the that albums strong points, whats worse is the vocals, forget whether they are metallica cloned, the vocals are downright horrible, no variation, nothing, the harshness of these vocals are laughable. There are positives, tread the floods, becoming the dragon and to the rats are decent songs with some good moments, but for every tread the floods theres too many anthems.

2.5 average | c0nf1n3d | February 4th 09 | Boring; but still not a bad album. While Ascendancy held such promise, and hands down, was an amazing album, this album is not so good of a follow up. The first two tracks, "Ignition" and "Detonation" are the only two good ones, from then on, it gets boring. Even the instrumental song isn't that memorable, it's the same thing over and over again. It sounds like a commercial loop or something. It's still not badly written, and the musicianship shines through so many times, but it's not Trivium's best.

4.0 excellent | sharksinyamouth | October 2nd 08 | Metalcore can sound a little dated sometimes, you know what I mean. This is why if Trivium released their third album to be another metalcore release, just like their previous two, it probably wouldn?t have gotten as high as a score it got. This is not metalcore. This is pure thrash metal. It was time for a change and Trivium accepted that fact and good for them. This was exactly what they needed. Now let?s just wait to see if their new album, Shogun (which is apparently a mixture of metalcore album Ascendancy and thrash metal album The Crusade) can deliver as good as The Crusade has.

Admittedly this is album has potential to be great but trivium have let themselves become fixed with the idea that metal fans are into the classics, and we are, but when it is obvious that a band is attempting to play like another it spoils it.
