Not necessarily the curveball everyone sort of expects from The Dear Hunter, Migrant follows the same direction as many of the tracks from The Color Spectrum which played closer to the usual sound of the band. Still, while the album plays things a little softer and a bit safer, it remains as lavish yet fitting as always, resulting in another beautiful success for Casey and what's quickly becoming the near entirety of the Crescenzo family.

After the beautiful wife that was "The Color Spectrum", Casey and company present to us a slightly disheveled more plain jane wife, that although intriguing, does not push the pleasure button as much as the previous wife.

Lots of good material here but easily TDH's most inconsistent output to date. The highs are as high as anything they've ever done and it's never bad, but it does leave some to be desired. Including the bonus tracks and allowing for some rearranging of the track list I could see it being a 8/10, but as is, this is where it sits.

Part of what makes Migrant great is that it's still The Dear Hunter's music but stripped down in a sense. As much as I like The Acts, I'm not always willing to commit to listen through them. Those are albums that are better enjoyed when listening to them in their entirety with the songs sounding better and making more sense in context. Honestly I'm not always willing to sit through the whole thing. Migrant doesn't revolve around any storylines or concepts; it's TDH crafting their music, and it's just as lush and well-written as their other releases.

Being a "barely thought" product is indeed a good one, one can't but appreciate the heartfelt lyrics, but there's always the feeling that musically-wise is a small step backwards and that Casey writes better music when he's following a concept. I don't think this is the direction he wants to bring his music to so I'm fine with this (good) momentary deviation.

From the two songs released thus far, "Whisper" and "An Escape", it's clear that The Dear Hunter are releasing quite an opus. First of all, as amazing a musician Casey Crescenzo is, he is a phenomenal producer and the production on this album is leagues above the quality of anything I have heard in a large number of years. Secondly, while "Whisper" was an instant classic with me, "An Escape" took a little longer to enjoy. I loathed "An Escape" on the first listen thinking it as The Dear Hunter throwing everything out that made them interesting, on repeated listens however it grew on me and is now one of my favourite songs by the band. I think this to be the case with the majority of the songs on this album. What I expect to hear from this album from what I've heard so far: top tier production, a continuation and, for lack of a better word, "good" version of The Colour Spectrum, with an occasional retro feel, slathered in excessive hooks by the master of melody himself, Casey Crescenzo. Also, "Whisper" makes me want to watch the popular kids show, Little Bear and there's nothing wrong with that, so props to them.
How the hell is this detailed GMB? I practically said nothing. :P
