Neil Young is to me an entity easier to appreciate tangentially and enjoy casually than really love andcrave deeper dives into. I find so much of his music appealing and easy to like, but never that easy to love. That is mostly due to his too loose a song-writing technique that mostly leaves a lot of room to want a more satisfying tune or a melody or a hook or sth.

Missed this one during my Neil Young awakening because it wasn't on CD. Amazing to find this now, both of us in our 40s. Walk On, Revolution Blues, and Ambulance Blues are standouts. I'll keep going back to this one for awhile

Despite having great financial success with his 1972 album Harvest, Neil Young found himself depressed. One of his best friends, named Danny Whitten, had overdosed on heroin in 1972 after being fired from Young's band, Crazy Horse. And so, in 1974, when On The Beach was released, audiences were met with dreary production and a pessimistic Neil, in stark contrast to Harvest. Lyrically, Neil is at the top of his game, with the hopeful "Walk On" and political "Vampire Blues" as obvious examples. However, it is side B of the album, containing three of his best songs, lyrically and instrumentally, in "On The Beach", "Motion Pictures", and "Ambulance Blues" that cement this record as one of Neil's best. For Neil, this is the fourth record in a row, chronologically speaking I might add, that has been hailed as a classic by critics around the world, something as challenging as it is impressive.

The best Neil's album. It has special burn-out feel. Neil managed to be very melodic on "See the Sky About to Rain" and "Walk On", and make some cool grooves, especially title track, "Revolution Blues", and "Vampire Blues" and put some gentle folky touches on "Motion Pictures", "Ambulance Blues", and "For The Turnstiles". All these three ingredients are perfectly balanced. What makes this album so special, is Neil delivery, in the same time he sounds like he had some revelation, he won his private war, but he maintained his sense for black humor, and never became indulgent.
