Birthdays further cements Keaton Henson as one of the greatest troubadours of melancholy
introspection. Wrapped in bigger production than Dear, the overall product is much more
diverse and all the more impacting because of it.

Once again a somber and depressive slowcore-slash-indie folk release by Keaton Henson. Birthdays sounds A LOT like its predecessor, Dear - and since imma non-lyric motherfucker, the quite bare musical approach doesn't help the engagement with the record. Except "Kronos". That one fucks.

This album is a perfect experience. The lyrics are simple and emotionally resonant. The whole thing is so stark and painfully real. Everything works together to create a feeling of desperation and ultimate loneliness. I listened to the album once and bought the vinyl because I knew that I couldn't forgive myself if I didn't have it in physical form. More artists need to learn this form of composition: finding the essence of one's own music and stripping everything else away. Beautiful, painful, and perfect. Further listening: "Laika" by Wil Wagner.
