Wavves' Afraid of Heights showcases a promising young surf/punk band. The album brings up some memories of The Beach Boys and Nirvana. The generally fast paced tracks have good energy and are usually spearheaded by the bass guitar and feature distant, sometimes distorted vocals that often seem bitter or sarcastic. The instrumentation and vocals aren't very impressive, and don't offer a ton of variety, but most of the songs are fairly enjoyable, if not formulaic. Best tracks are Demon to Lean on, Lounge Forward, Paranoid, That's on Me and the title track.
