The funny thing about U2 is that only one member of the band was in any way trained on his
instrument (Mullen, non-negotiable as the drummer). By a minor miracle, they had *something*
akin to an alchemy that made them a distinctive, creative and ultimately significant band.
Their covers, however, were almost always clumsy, heavy-handed bar band amateurism. It's like
they had no feel for anything that wasn't their style. The way they kill the melody of
'Unchained Melody' so that it becomes just another powerful and unhinged Bono vocal is so
cack-handed it's endearing.

U2 were a singles band. That, in my mind, isn't even a debatable point. None of their albums managed to be good throughout. This, however, is awesome. Just the first side is worth the price and more - "New Year's Day", "Pride", "With or Without You", "Where The Streets Have No Name", "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", and "Sunday Bloody Sunday" are all amongst the best songs of the '80s. If "One" and the singles from All That You Can't Leave Behind were here, it'd be the only U2 album you'd ever need.
