Indisputably good musicians, The Band are too homely to find the darkness in 'Tears of Rage' and 'The Long Black Veil'. Whilst this is a good album, it's hard to identify what distinguishes The Band from any other roots act, past or future.

The album that started it all, Music from Big Pink marks the very beginning of "the new" - which in this case means, quite interestingly, going back to the roots. Initially known mainly for the Dylan connection, The Band's stripped-down, natural, almost country-like sound has in (a short) time gained followers of its own, including, among others, Neil Young and The Rolling Stones.

As much as I didn't expect it, this sounds SO good to me. With a couple exceptions (classic prog generally) most music made before the 80's seems foreign to my ears and it's hard for me to really enjoy it and latch onto it... but this, THIS! Even decades later it can still hit new listeners in the same perfect way it hit my grandparents when it came out. 4.2/5
