"Sure 'Nuff 'n' Yes, I Do" is bluesy and electrically gritty. Love it. "Zig Zag Wanderer" is forgettable; it rocks slightly, but, overall a dud. "Call On Me" is heart wrenching yet still remains electric; great song. "Dropout Boogie" is too silly and thus distracts from the inherent electricity and volatility found in this album; a dud. "I'm Glad" is simply perfect; quiet yet powerful. Favorite song on this album. "Electricity" is eccentric but overall grating. "Yellow Brick Road" is fun, but, unfortunately forgettable. Sad. "Abba Zaba" is a dud; also, forgettable. "Plastic Factory" is so fucking bluesy; it grooves so hard. Love it. "Where There's Woman" is quietly bluesy; then picks up traction throughout. "Grown So Ugly" is a bit too commonplace for me to groove to; not necessarily a dud though. Slightly enjoyable. "Autumn's Child" is a viable album closer, as it fits the innate strangeness and volatility in this album well. In summation, an intriguing album but not universally great. A few stellar standouts; others are too forgettable to afford many re-listenings. C+r- Zach

Beefheart's debut is an angular, psychedelic blues rock record and one of his most straightforward pieces. It's slightly uneven, but some of the compositions are absolutely phenomenal ("Zig Zag Wanderer," "Call on Me," "Autumn's Child") and the originality and boldness of these tunes is admirable. Beefheart's vocals are excellent, too, growling and snarling, and even, on occasion, crooning ("I'm Glad"). The CD version features seven mostly lengthy bonus tracks which are fine, but not as good as the main album material.

SAFE AS MILK is such a weird variation on the 60's electric blues-rock sound. This is probably one of the more
accessible Captain Beefheart albums and probably a good place to start for the uninitiated. I may have to scratch my
chin on this one over a few more listens. It doesn't make me run screaming from the room, but is weird enough to make
me question whether or not I actually like this (or not). Good playing by Ry Cooder here.
Highlights: "Sure Nuff 'N' Yes I Do".

Considering Frank Zappa's work, I would've thought the tracks on here would be much better, but this album's biggest flaw is how long they made the average track. Hell, their bonus tracks going beyond the 5-minute mark were more entertaining for their jam rock quality. If all their tracks focused on that principle, I'm sure this album would be worth the average +4/5 rating this site allows.
