There are very few moments in my life when I truly feel compelled to say something, and
this album has done it. I'll start with the totality of this album and go into finer
details.
First, this album is obviously Death Metal and the band acknowledges that. However, they
do venture (tastefully) into other genres of metal that may turn away some purists. For
instance, their opening track, which is more of an intro---"Oblivion part 1: Chant of the
Tyrants" sounds like Doom and Atmospheric Metal, almost Post-Rock sounding. "Binary Souls"
has this Progressive Metal element to it. "Canon 1 in E minor" sounds like Classical Music
written for metal guitar. "Multiverse" is a modern take on American Black Metal. The 2
bonus tracks at the end "Shred I and II" are string orchestra arrangements. Very cool!
The vocals by Nick Vasallo are very impressive. Vasallo reminds me of a good blend of
George Fisher and Frank Mullen. They are powerful, punchy, yet very intelligible. If you
have been listening to Death Metal for years you may not even need a lyric sheet. His
range is very wide which he shows off in "Black Veils of Justice". I think the vocalist
may be the demented person speaking in the beginning of the CD as well on the "Chant of
the Tyrants" track.
The guitar-work by Ted O'Neill and Victor Dods is brilliant. This is really where OBLIVION
shines. The time and thoughtfulness they spent on the writing really shows in the guitars.
There are multiple layers but they all work together. When the riffs are heavy they are
performed thick and chunky. When there is a tremolo section they sound tight and biting.
We must applaud the production of this CD as well, it is top notch Metal at its finest.
The solos are well written and performed with excellence, as can be heard in "Reclamation"
and "Reigns of Fire".
The basslines by Ben Orum (ex-ALL SHALL PERISH) are insane as well with brief flashes of
solos during "Reclamation" and "Binary Souls". They sit nice in the mix and support the
guitars well.
The drumming by Luis Martinez is insane. Fast and technical yet very musical. There are
times when I can't tell what the drummer is doing because it sounds so crazy with the
music. If you like blast beats, double bass drilling, and even gravity blasts--look no
further! There are even moments of jazz-like fills and off-time beats.
Bottom line: this band is insanely talented. Not just as musicians but the music is very
well written. The singer is also an established composer which really shows. This band
sounds nothing like ALL SHALL PERISH which is perhaps why Ben Orum left.
I can't get enough of this album. And I'm sure it will be a classic 10 years from now.
Maybe more...brilliant brilliant record.

goddamn this album is amazing. i listen to is everyday to work and back home. and while i surf the web. i predict this band as the next big thing.

While the production is great and the skill of the musicians is obvious, many of the songs on this album sound like something I would throw together on a Sunday afternoon.
