JUST a collection of songs? That's what every album is, this album is fantastic. Morrissey's lyrics are always on point and Johnny Marr is a genius. Fuck.

Morrissey and Johnny Marr, the latter having been eventually known for his tenure with indie rock outfit Modest Mouse, concede defeat in a righteously grim way on Meat Is Murder. The Smiths present an album wallowing in self-deprecation whilst showcasing a very neat flair for intricate arrangements. "How Soon Is Now?" is without a doubt a grand earworm made enjoyable because of Morrissey's rich voice, and "Barbarism Begins at Home" has an apparent funkiness to it which must never go unheard.

'The Smiths' delivered self-pity with enough wry humour to have you humming Morrissey's neurotic one-liners all lonely Saturday night long ("Does the body rule the mind or does the mind rule the body? I dunno"). 'Meat Is Murder', however, is unbalanced in its po-faced, Mancurian misery. Opener 'Headmaster Ritual' is more like an OH & S officer's report into child abuse than a song: none of Morrissey's abstract wit is here. But it's nowhere near as bad as the preachy, hammy 'Meat is Murder', which wrings every heavy-handed vegetarian cliche "This beautiful creature must die/And death for no reason is MURDER!'') into six stuffy, solemn minutes. It is so unsubtle and unclever that, with only slight tweaking, it would be magnificent parody. Ultimately, the less promoted songs carry 'Meat is Murder', particularly in its strong middle order: an injection of life into the gloom with 'I Want The One I Can't Have' and 'That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore', with the completely raving 'Nowhere Fast' superbly flipping the bird to Britain's cheerless grey.

I probably would've rated this higher but Meat is Murder just kinda kills the album at the end. Sure it's the album's title track, but it could've at least been done much differently. It was forced in there and just left me with a bad taste.

despite it's standout tracks [How Soon Is Now, the Headmaster Ritual, Nowhere Fast], Meat is Murder is otherwise kind of bland from both a musical standpoint and a songwriting standpoint. some tracks are really unmemorable, but this is nevertheless a fun album and works good as background music.

Between their raw debut and their masterpiece "The Queen is Dead", "Meat is Murder" seems more like a transition record.Quite experimental on some songs(Barbarism Begins At Home is kind of funky) and over indulgent in others(the title track is probably their weirdest song and sadly,one of their worst), the album feels just like a collection of songs.
Still, songs like How Soon is Now,Well I Wonder and I Want The One I Cant Have can trully be considered Smiths classics and help the album a lot.
If you are new to The Smiths,go elsewhere(The Queen is Dead).If you like the other albums too,then you will enjoy Meat Is Murder.

This for me, is the best album by The Smiths. It's darker than the others, and has a deeper atmosphere. It does start slow, with the first three tracks being good, but not great. But on the forth track 'What She Said', the whole thing explodes into perfection and continues in that vein right through to the finish. There are so many classics on here, like 'That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore', 'How Soon Is Now', 'Well I Wonder' and 'Barbarism Begins At Home'. A brilliant, brilliant LP.
