Amazing indie rock record from Yo La Tengo, IMO, superior to some of their more acclaimed works.

Long, short, slow, fast, loud, soft, wandering, concise, raucous, peaceful - mix and match over the course of fifteen tracks and nearly 80 minutes of music, and you have Yo La Tengo's latest release. This was my first taste of the band, after hearing their name dropped just about every time somebody said "Indie", and I was incredibly impressed with what they offer on I Am Not Afraid of You...
Whether it be the sprawling opener and closer, the slew of upbeat and majestically simple pop hooks tinged with crafty instrumentation, or the mellow and moody numbers that show up every few tracks or so, the album maintains the listener's interest over its incredible length. Yo La Tengo showcase just how diverse their songwriting is and the breadth of their creativity on I Am Not Afraid of You... and produce a large collection of solid, memorable tracks.

Yo La Tengo's greatest strength has to be their unrelenting experimentation and diversity within albums. Using the similar formula from I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One in spanning as much as they can within their trio in styles and genres to make a fearlessly long album. The result is instrumentals veering off in lengthy directions, shimmering pop songs, and exotic juxtapositions of styles. Fronting duo couple Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley's sweet harmonies are backed from chamber pop grooves to Kinks-powered garage rock. While it has a great collection of songs, it makes a weaker package as an album, but still proves to be one of 2006's best.

Having little desire initially to check out this album since some of the users on Sputnikmusic who recommended it to me have, in the past, recommended material I could hardly stomach, I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your As[font=verdana]s[/font] was a surprising listen. Filled with catchy dream-pop hooks but also some harder-hitting tracks for good measure and balance, Yo La Tengo deliver yet another solid release. "Sometimes I Don't Get You" and "I Should Have Known Better," while having personally ironic songtitles for yours truly, are easily the album's highlights. Perhaps this personally-attributed irony - from how I first listened to it to the songs that stick out the most for me - is what makes this album speak to me and thus makes for such a rewarding listen. My thanks goes out to those users who recommended an album I actually liked - I say this in jest, of course.
