Sung Tongs is a heap of faux-exoticism that is laid waste with its lack of memorable musical moments and a lack of conviction that is in the guise of pretentious, contrived transethnic qualities. Unlike Vampire Weekend, the tracks here rarely have a saving grace. Very few choruses are memorable, and very few save a lulling track from fading into obscurity. Animal Collective failed with this release, and what a major failure it was.

It's light. It's spacey. It's quirky. It's a little self-indulgent. And it's certainly NOT for everyone. But I love this album to death. It's almost certainly a summer album, and you can tell that Animal Collective had a lot of fun recording these tracks.

A refreshing, icicle-picked, occasionally sparse, ocasionally rich record from the primarily dense, lo-fi heavy Animal Collective. This record could definitely grow on me. The melodies and moments of clarity on this album are such a breath of fresh air to the stale, stuffy sound of "Here Comes The Indian." Surprisingly good and, in several spots, radiantly catchy and joyful.

It's right around now in the careers of Animal Collective where they began rediscovering their roots: making legitimate pop songs and shrouding them in all sorts of psychedelic folk weirdness, like they did on Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished. The difference on Sung Tongs is that the group now had a much larger musical palette to arrange their songs from, and though it doesn't always translate into gold, there are sections of the album that not only remind you how great they were at their conception, but how great they would eventually become as well. The first half of the album is pound-for-pound one of the best stretches of music Animal Collective ever penned, and though the album does take a bit of a nosedive after "Visiting Friends", the strength of the first half is enough to warrant it a listen. Their best would undoubtedly be yet to come, but it would be remiss of anyone professing to enjoy AC to skip this step on their journey.

Last time I checked in with Animal Collective, I listened to Feels. That was my favorite album by them, so as I kept listening to all their albums in reverse chronological order, I was very excited for Sung Tongs. Unfortunately, I was a bit let down. After listening numerous times, I could pick out several tracks that I really enjoy, like We Tigers and Visiting Friends. However, the rest of the songs on here fall flat for me. My friend Nathan expected this, though. My favorite band is Radiohead, and he described this album as "the opposite of Radiohead".
