woah, what an improvement in every single way. highly recommended, the best 'cascadian black metal' album (whatever that is) to come out in ages

wow, this is REALLY good and a huge improvement over their previous stuff. I liked The Hunt but even so would only give that release a 3 or 3.5 - after 4 listens bumping this from a 4.5 to 5. Ridiculously good

Easily the best record of their career, Avifauna takes the best parts of the band's signature lengthy black metal/folk style and crafts it into three 17+ minute epics. Where "Rain" saw the band slowly evolve over the course of an hour, "Avifauna" sees the band experiment with more structured songwriting, giving each of the main tracks enough repetition to immerse the listener in the band's signature hypnotic atmosphere, with enough variance to always keep things interesting.

After all but banishing the black metal elements on the hunt, this time fauna are back with a perfect combination between the hypnotic tribal hunt and the more black metal fare that was rain. They seem to have found the perfect balance for their style here with the production being improved to add to the feel of everything. Their best yet.
