Magic Potion marked a stylistic change for the Black Keys. Before, they sounded alot like a White Stripes rip off, and I'm not really all that cool with white boys singing the blues; never have been. But they have transitioned into more of a soul sound, which is a lot more natural sounding. The blues influence is still there, I just feel like Magic Potion has more variety to offer. The lyrics are unremarkable and the vocals often sound lifeless. The lack of bass also adds to that hollow feel, and the bass drum thump is pretty much the same on every track. There is some pretty fine guitar work though, and a couple of really solid, heartfelt songs, like You're the One, make it worth a listen, but the Black Keys remain a band that just sounds bland.
