The rich, evocative narratives of 'Henry Lee' and 'Where The Wild Roses Grow' and the cackling psycho freak outs 'The Curse of Millhaven' and 'O'Malley's Bar' are the successful executions of Cave's explorations into the dynamics, moralities and neuroses of murder. Then you've got inaudible mumbling and repetitive storylines over bummed-out backtracks. And then to close it there's 'Death is Not The End', which is the funniest of the lot whether it means to be or not. Seriously, Monty Python couldn't have thought of a better closer than Cave and his guest artists joining hands and singing the Goth equivalent of kumbaya.

The last good album from Nick Cave, inc. until 2013's Push the Sky Away. Most of the tracks, notably "Song of Joy", both vocal duets and "The Curse of Millhaven" successfully evoke the atmosphere of sleepy little villages, where a murder (or two) is going to take place. Even more effective is the band leader's terrific impersonation of a serial killer on the 14-minute "O'Malley's Bar", though the music itself could use some variety.

For me, Nick Cave is the best songwriter in the world and Murder Ballads his masterpiece. Lyrics doesn't lack humor, seriousness, sorrow and all these cool things they're supposed to have. Music doesn't repeat itself or become boring. His own voice can't be EVER mistaken for any other. You could take his duet with Kylie Minogue as a bonus to already excellent album.

Murder Ballads is basically what you'd get if you wrote a pantomine about the most gruesome murders possible. Except, this isn't the stage production i'd like the audience to yell "he's behind you!" out and be referring to one of Nick Cave's characters.

This album is classic, the only thing keeping it from being a 5, is less the over the top melodrama and more for the hint of dull in a few of the songs. If you dont like dark bordering on comic lyrics with an occationally dismal underscore, this may not be for you. The writing while skirting over the top here and there, is wonderfully discriptive. You have to think of some of cave's classical inspiration, the greeks, milton and many others are a bit extreme and frequently lack a certain subtlety. Think of this as a modern entry into such a tradition. As for the music it can be heartwrenching (Where the Wild Roses Grow), it can be rawkus (Curse of Millhaven) and it can be dirty (Stagger Lee). It is any type of brooding and sinister you like.

Nick Caves truly approached death with an eye not often used during his age of music. He is still macabre even in this modern age were shock is a vital tool and goth culture reings supreme. His voice has dynamic rang and his music is a tight machine. His reputation will only continue to grow as more people listen to this album.
