Arguably the most overrated album in history, Master of Puppets is a parody of itself. The riffs are standard fair for a thrash/speed band. The songwriting is nothing special and gets rather predictable. Hetfield's voice is the most aggravating noise in the world since Chris Tucker's whine. The oft-praised Cliff Burton doesn't really do anything that impressive. And yes, I listened to Orion, but didn't understand what the big deal was. And I think we're all in agreement that in lack of talent, Lars is only surpassed by Meg White. In short, this is an over-hyped "right album, right time" deal that was already surpassed by its contemporaries and was swiftly left in the dust only a few short years later.

The most famous thrash metal album ever wasn't even meant to be a thrash metal album at all. The band's aim was to move beyond the genre completely, introducing a level of intelligence and compositional technique unheard of in thrash metal (or almost ANY metal at that point), without sacrificing any of their sheer brute force. They did so perfectly. Ironic, then, that the album's primary theme is being controlled, whether by addiction ("Master Of Puppets"), mental illness ("Welcome Home (Sanitarium)"), or religion ("Leper Messiah") - with this album, Metallica made themselves masters of their own destiny. So it's a shame that, 20 years on, they haven't even come close to topping it. Though, to be fair, not many other bands have either.

One of the greatest albums ever made, and I'm not saying that lightly. MoP is as close to perfect an album as I have ever heard, with just the right blend of melody, heaviness and raw production. My only real complaint? Bass needs to be louder, and I hope that they go back and rectify this someday. For now, the album is still classic even after almost a quarter of a century. It raised the bar for both Metallica themselves and all metal bands thereafter. To some it may seem dated but in 1986 this was one of the heaviest and unique-sounding albums, from the chilling acoustic intro of Battery, the melodic instrumental interlude of the awesome title track, the sheer heaviness of The Thing That Should Not Be and the amazing bass work on Orion. Truth be told, if you don't like this album, you're not a real metal fan, you only think you are.

Master of Puppets is the essential thrash metal album from the essential thrash metal band. I know there are a lot of Metallica haters out there. Well, perhaps they don't know what they're missing. If that happens to be the case, look into Master of Puppets first and foremost. Eight tracks of pure adrenaline. Notable songs are "Master of Puppers," "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", "Disposable Heroes," and the instrumental "Orion." That's not to say the rest of this album is lackluster, cause in the end, it's fucking Metallica.

Most overrated album in history. Truth be told, it doesnt completly suck, but its far from the best. compared to the latter works of Kreator (1989-1990), and Dark Angel, this is average, and somewhat shabby. however, the instrumental, Orion, is awesome, and I havent heard anything like it before or since. Still, this band was from from the greatest. Besides, RTL is a MUCH better album. Bands like Megadeth, Testament, and Dark Angel and Forbidden should have been as well known as this band, as they were much more talented.

Giving this a 5 is almost saying that you are ignorant to good music. People think that if you like Metallica then you're a little fanboy who hasn't branched out and listened to anything good yet. Well I've listened to Opeth, I've listened to Sigur Ros, and I've listened to Maudlin of the Well, and guess what...this is still a 5 for me. Not a weak song here. The riffs can be heavy, or they shred away like none other. James Hetfields voice is right is the perfect mixture of his kill em all raspy voice and his black album godly voice. The title track is a thrash classic, Sanitarium is up there with Fade to Black and One as far as their "ballads" go, and Orion is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard. And there are still 5 more songs of this quality to go! Master of Puppets is the pinnacle of Metallica's career. Say what you will about them now, but this album has stood the test of time and has earned every ounce of praise it has gotten.

Great lyrics, riffs, drum beats, and bass. Metallica really put some work into this album. It certianly paid off in my opinion and this is an unforgettable album to me.Songs Such as Battery come off as Awesome with its quick pace and That pace seems to continue through out the entire album. Other then orion the album seems very fast paced. The best songs on here well To me is Sanitarium and the song that is also the album name.

Master of Puppets is what I would call the golden age of Metallica. This album has everything that I love about these guys. Every song is a solid track, and serves a purpose to the masterpiece that is Master of Puppets. Tracks such as The Thing That Should Not Be may be considered filler to some, but the mood present in the song is hauntingly amazing. The riffage in the album is top notch, as seen in songs such as Leper Messiah and Master of Puppets. Battery and Damage Inc. are thrashy, aggressive, killer songs that are good for nothing except getting pumped up and headbanging the **** out. Finally, the melodies present in Orion and Sanitarium are nothing short of spectacular. This was also, in my eyes, the peak of Hetfield's vocals. This record is proof that Kirk and Lars USED to be able to play good, as well as showing the genious of the man we call Cliff Burton.

Definitely a landmark in metal history. Master of Puppets remains Metallica's album as it shows thier ability to play thrash better than just about anyone in the business. But not only does Metallica thrash on this album, they have numerous slow verses and breakdowns which make this album stand out from everything else in the genre when Master of Puppets was first released. "Master of Puppets", "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", and "Orion [Instrumental]" present some of the most memorable riffs in metal in my opinion.

Looking to subtly refine superb predecessor 'Ride the Lightning', Californian quartet Metallica hit pay-dirt with 3rd LP 'Master of Puppets'. The final LP to feature bassist Cliff Burton, this relentless riff & solo extravaganza sees the outfit satisfyingly evolve their song-writing skills, as well as improve vocally & lyrically. Incorporating progressive tendencies into their technical brand of thrash-metal, these 8 tunes present 55 minutes of muscular aggression & melodic speed. So for the 2nd time in a row, Metallica produce a landmark release without filler. Recommended Tracks: Disposable Heroes, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Battery & Master of Puppets.

R.I.P. Cliff Burton. I really liked his bass. He really put out some nice tracks. Jason Newsted and Robert Trujillo aren't self confident enough to make sound when they use the bass. I really don't get how they got the name master of puppets.
My least favorite song (i actually don't even like this song) is the thing that should not be. The title speaks for itself, it is a thing that should not have been created. Welcome home, sanitarium is actually good. Master of puppets is one of my favorites because of its dun dun.... dun dun dun. I cant get it out of my head. It really is infectious. The lyrics are really well made out that when you find out it was about cocaine it actually makes sense. The worst part is the fact that cliff burton is barely audible when he starts singing the lyrics.
This is there best album without a doubt.
Lyrics to Master of puppets are great

Even at the early stages of Kill 'em All, Metallica were pioneers of metal, if not music. They decided to take out the dragon slaying and the cock rock of those years' metal; and the result couldn't have been better. Two albums later they perfected their own version of Thrash Metal; while death might be the main "gimmick" of the album, it's made clear that they also have a lot to say about religion, madness, drug abuse or war. And it's not only the message, but the way it is presented to the listeners ears: with the pure unlimited talent of the band members: from the intro of Battery to the last riff in Damage Inc. This album is Metallicas "IV", "Dark Side of the Moon" or "Number of the Beast": A milestone in Metal; if not music as a whole.

It grew on me. Having utterly hated this the first few times I heard it, the infectious title track began to grow on me, and Battery, Sanitarium and Leper Messiah followed. However, the first half is just clearly so much better than the second half, though songs such as Damage Inc. and Disposable Heroes (great titles both, especially the latter) may take time to grow on me. Orion and The Thing That Should Not Be both feel like lowlights, though neither are particularly bad.
The best way to describe the sound of this album would be your standard, slightly fuzzy and guitar-centric thrash production, love-it-or-hate-it vocals (I fit into both catergories, depending on the song) which are mostly melodic shouts, but never screams, a very underground feel, standard fare thrashy riffs which are nevertheless very well done, great soloing, average-to-bad drumming and mostly inaudible though fairly good bass. It reeks of underground worship, as if it was destined to be praised by metalheads everywhere at some point, but the top-heaviness is inexcusable, although any thrash fan should have this album. Metallica hit their peak in their next, more progressive album, ...And Justice For All, although the production and vocals certainly stepped up for this album, making it a worthwhile purchase for pretty much any metalhead, or indeed anyone who is fairly new to metal.

This is, on my list, Metallica's second best album, only with Kill 'em All beating it. The song writing and the talent is insane. Cliff and Lars, throughout the whole album, are hitting their marks with crazy fills. Kirk lays down some of his best solos ever with screaming licks. James' voice still isnt at its best. In my opinion James sounds best on either the ...And Justice For All or the Black Album. But I'm not saying that his voice isn't good. Master of Puppets is Metallica's best and heaviest album (slightly edging out Ride the Lightning), and deserves it's spot among the 3 or 4 best heavy albums of all time. It's also a record they would never top, as they were never able to develop chemistry with another bass player following Cliff Burton's passing. I always felt that he had a bigger part in the writing of lyrics than he was given credit for, considering the sharp drop off in content after this album. The band is fully in sync for almost every second of Master of Puppets, and their few sloppy moments give it some honest charm. The production is huge, and fits this style of metal perfectly. All 8 tracks are powerful, tense, virtoustic pieces of thrash that don't overstay their welcome and always leave an impact. It's one of the few from that era that doesn't sound completely dated either. A monstrous classic that will never be forgotten.

Without a doubt a classic, but Ride the Lightning still gets my top Metallica pick. It is similar to Ride in a lot of ways, like in the song structures, but completely different music and lyrics. Battery starts off slow and acoustic then turns into a blaze of fire, Master of Puppets is about the what drugs can do to you, created like a symphony, starting off fast, slows down and gets melodic, then goes into the fast solo. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) is one of their best power ballads, starts off slow, moody, melodic, and a strong finish, and Orion puts Cliff's bass skills to the test, plus a great bass intro on Damage, Inc., and Leper Messiah is underrated and has a great solo done by Kirk, but The Thing That Should Not Be and Disposable Heroes are not bad by any means, but they're too long for what the songs are which drags the album down slightly. Highlights: Battery, Master of Puppets, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Leper Messiah, Orion

While not as good or as whimsical as Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets marks the first (and arguably biggest commercial/critical) peak for thrash metal as a whole, and what it lacks in innovation, it compensates for being well produced (this record sounds fucking huge), well played, and refined. "Disposable Heroes," "Leper Messiah," "Damage Inc.," and "Battery" are packed with catastrophic riffs, all backed up by Cliff's impressive and deep-sounding basswork, a rare feat for the genre. Jame's vocals are more commanding this time around as well, and many of these tunes have went down in thrash history as among the best works of the genre. MoP is a genre highlight and is the genre's biggest example of refinement to a well established formula.

Everything in that song is basically expanded in other songs in the album.rI heard the song Master of Puppets before listening to the album, and my initial reaction was, "So Metallica found a way to increase the length of one song into a full album."rMaybe it's only fair to say that because the song has so much in it, but it really seems like there's not much reason to listen to the whole album if you only have to listen to one song to experience the whole thing.

We're talking here about the holy bible. If "Kill em all" and "Ride the Lightning" was the old metal testament (even the lyrics are so brutal as the vengeful god of those ancient times) here we have the definitive New Testament. I have always thought that "Orion" is a strange metaphore of rescucitated Jesus travelling to heaven and "Damage, Inc." is how he left the world after his departure. And "Master of Puppets", I guess, is his father pulling the strings, or Jacob in the island.

This album is definately the height of Metallica's career, every song is brilliant, the title song is a work of thrash art, everything before and after pales in comparison to this thrash masterpiece.

At its best, Master of Puppets is a strong, at times narrative-driven thrash metal album that will do more than enough to get you pumped up and singing (or yelling) its lyrics. At its worst, the album has some of the dull, slow moments that the band exhibited on Ride the Lightning. In the end, it's another stellar release for the band that, as with its predecessors, falls a step or two short of the masterpiece mark with classic songs unfortunately dragged down by lesser tracks.

What can i say?. This is a masterclass in how to structure an album. The album follows a theme and runs strong. Each song's theme deals with "Submitting" to something. whether it be false religion as in "Lepper Messiah" or The soldiers who lay down their lives for the rich people "Disposable heroes". The album kicks off with the Bone crushing force of "Battery", in similar fashion to "Fight fire with fire" and into more of the slower songs and concludes with the most epic instrumental track you will hear "Orion" Filled with beautiful melodic solos and the track "Damage INC" which is a throwback to the old metallica. The Title track is without doubt one of the greatest metal songs of all time.

In 1986, Metallica released one the greatest albums ever made. This one is a must-own for any metal head or any fan of music in general, it's simply flawless. I find myself always citing this album as my biggest musical inspiration, and it is. Welcome Home Sanitarium, Orion, Master of Puppets and Battery would all be among my favorite songs of all time. The infinite awesomeness of this record is timeless and the impact that it's had on society is astronomical. Master of Puppets is the essential album of the 1980's and an important record for any fan of music.

Easily the most over-rated album, probably ever. It's not bad at all, but far too
over-rated. There's alot of talent here. Alot of great riffs & solos. But, the riffs get
slightly repetitive & James' vocals are annoying. Lars does a good job with his drumming,
but being born into a generation where it's nothing I haven't heard I guess I can't
understand it's amazing mark on music history. Still, songs like Welcome Home
(Sanitarium) & most of Master of Puppets are quality tracks. Battery has probably the
greatest intro I have ever heard, but the rough transition to heavy metal & James' vocals
ruin the potential it had. Still, though, I wasn't born in Metallica's generation & all
the rip-offs I've heard have made this album a little boring. There's some great stuff
though, so I recommend it to anybody who likes good ol' heavy metal.

Metallica's finest work, and most likely the greatest piece of thrash metal ever created.
Fast, agressive and raw. Belongs in any metal fans collection.

Widely Acclaimed as Metallica's best album i really don't agree... i just can't listen to it over and over again like i can with and justice for all and also i think the thing that should not be in one of metallica's worst songs.
Still really great though with classic's like Master of Puppets, Sanitarium, and Battery.

Metallica launched their quest for world domination with Kill 'em All, then made their massive nucelar bomb with Ride the Lightning, now it is time for the bomb to burst.
In comes, Master of Puppets.
One word for me could describe this album: Atmosphere
Every song on this hour masterpiece has an atmospheric feeling to it.
"Battery"-Heart-pounding drums, cruchy riffs, it feels like you are in the mosh pit taking out people in your sight. If Metallica is known for something, it is a good opening song for an album.
"Master of Puppets"-Not many bands can put a song that contains moshing, headbanging, and a lighter in the air moment simulaneously. These were the first sounds I heard when I was born. And I was hooked on Metallica.
"The Thing That Should Not Be"-This is a good song, but it kinda drags along at times. Not as good as "For Whom the Bell Tolls," but a good song none the less.
"Sanitarium"-The token ballad, I listen to this more than Fade to Black and One . It has that dark, errie feeling to it from the intro riff. Plus, a nice, killer solo to close the song.
"Disposable Heroes"-This gives you the feeling of being in a war zone, behind enemy lines, machine guns a-firing. This is the song I listen to the least on the album, but a good song at best.
"Leper Messiah"-I'm a sucker for infectious riffs, such as this song. I find this to be one of Metallica's underrated songs. It goes from a methodical riff-cruncher, to an all out headbanger by the time the solo kicks in.
"Orion"-Enough can't be said about this instrumental. I tend to listen to this at night, just listen to the bass intro. It sounds like your at a space-station. So what if it's 8 minutes long, this is Metallica at it's finest.
"Damage Inc."-Out to close the album is the fastest song on the album, and a great way to close the album. You could argue that this was Lars' best drum performance on the album, but that would be a tall order. This along with "Metal Militia," and "Phantom Lord" should be played live more often.
Puppets is one of the few albums I can listen to from start to finish without skipping or shuffling. It's metal at its best.
Some will argue that Ride the Lightning is better than Master of Puppets, but that's a question for another day.
A Metal Master Piece.
|4.5 superb||VicariousIntent | November 25th 08|
One shouldn't be surprised to see or hear that Metallica's infamous "Master of Puppets" album is praised as a classic by most. It's interesting how even though a great deal of time has passed, it still displays why it's strengths today. The production doesn't show any age, the band is tight and together, and every song is memorable and enjoyable. It's easy to overlook that most of the songs on the album are decently long because there are no dull moments in any of them. Metallica keeps the intensity and power tight on every song.
Overall, it's just a really enjoyable record. Not for everyone, sure, but what is? The truth is, if it wasn't for record like Master of Puppets not only would I have never found the music I love, but it would have been the same for so many others. And that, if anything, is what makes this a classic record.

Metallica's Master of Puppets is constantly being crapped on by 14 year old "metal-heads" who try to be "edgy" by saying that Ride The Lightning is better. Well I say SUCK IT to all those people because Master of Puppets is way superior to all the damn lightning-riders out there. This album's sweet.

As if anything more needs to be said about this album - what, 19 sound offs and more than 1000 ratings?
Metallica have always been the most accessible metal band on the planet. And so it is that Master Of Puppets is a rockin', powerful album - aside from any labels of genres. The power and energy are brilliant and the guitar work is - as always - both stunning and pensive.
I generally hate anything with screaming and 'Death Metal' is arguably my most disliked genre. As long as you can handle some serious Rock - heavy guitars and full-blooded energy - this album will not offend your ears. Something I can say about few metal albums. But then again, this is more what I call "Hard Rock" than "Metal". Battery is a brilliant opening track, and the quality is spread throughout one of the most consistent albums you're likely to hear. The title-track, Sanitarium and Orion are other notable highlights.
People label this as "essential for metalheads" or whatever - no, this is one of the essential metal albums of all time, regardless of what type of music you like.

God liked Metallica. He thought they were a good band. So what did the almighty-one do? He gave the four men in the band the power to make one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all-time. God enhanced James Hetfield's vocals, making them better than the vocals on Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning. The Big G gave Lars the power to be a better drummer, and he also gave Cliff Burton and Kirk Hammet powers that enhanced their bass skills and guitar skills. He gave Metallica the power to make an album that even critics would enjoy after about five years of the album sitting on the shelves of the record store. It's a shame that the band's self-titled 1991 album had to be released just for Master Of Puppets, an album that some sort of supernatural being or diety had so much to do with, to be noticed. Oh well. It was a waste of time writing this sound-off, but still.

Amazing album, incredible depth with both playing and songwriting. The songs are long but never boring. The band are at the peak of their game. Still sounds remarkably fresh after allthese years. If you're just getting into metal and you don't have this, buy it!!!

Well, I prefer a bit softer and more melodic music, several songs on this album are sounding too same (I don't care much for lyrics), but definitely, for the title song Master of Puppets, Sanitarium and Orion, this album is worth buying. I do not know if this is their best or not, what I know is that this album is not easy to be heard in one run, If you are not a true metal-head :-)

Well first off Metallica is one of the best metal bands that ever exsited. They are the kings of thrash. So many bands have been influenced by them. I think this is their best album though. I am pretty sure it is the second to last album with Cliff Burton may his soul R.I.P. But anyway this album is excellent. It has several hits and it is a pure classic. You would defintaly be getting your moneys worth on this one. It has of course one of the best songs by them Master of Puppets. It also includes Welcome Home (sanitarium) and Damage inc. It is a great thrash album. Kirk Hammet's riffs are amazing and Hetfield just brings it with the vocals. Lars just does amazing with the drums and Cliff owns the Bass. This isn't your typical thrash album this a album that no one could ever forgot. This album was made in 1986 and it is still one of the best albums. Several people still listen to it and everybody knows almost every song on it. Several people have remade the song Master of Puppets. The have made sevral albums after this one and are still going today but i suggest this album. It is excellent.

Master....MASTER! I love this album to death! It's possibly the greatest trash metal album of all time (tied for first with Rust In Peace). It's albums like these that define metal, and raise the bar for other metal bands. My Favourite song is......Battery. Very cool album!
|4.5 superb||TheSunSleeps348 | November 24th 06|
Great album, but James Hetfeild's voice can be boring and sound crappy at parts. Guitars are great, same with drums. This is definatly one of Metallica's better albums, and totally craps on all their newer albums. I strongly disagree with what Steerpike said, becuase this is probably going to be one of the most remembered thrash albums of all time.. it deserves a little more than a two, no matter how much you don't like it. Also, i think what you are saying is based too much on opinion, like i said, no matter how much you don't like it, that shouldn't effect your rating so much as it did. Anyways, amazing album. //etallica rocks (atleast in their earlier days)

If any album deserves a 5/5 it's this one! Metallica is my favourite band, and this is my favourite album from them. I heard some of their demos from their upcoming album in 2007, and it sounds like something off of the Black album! I cant wait! Master of Puppets rules! My fav. tracks are: Master of Puppets, Battery, Disposable Heroes, and Leper Messiah. Hell, they're all my favourites! So hard to choose!

A very worthy metal album that will undoubtably be remembered through the ages as a triumph of metal. From start to finish expect high octane stuff from the boys in Metallica. Not only is it an epic of an album but its catchy, not fall out boy catchy but actually a superb catchyness. If oyu dont have this, or have never heard this, well...um...why?!
|3.5 great||MyRamona | June 26th 06|
metallica's best songwriting went into this album. The epic 'Master of puppets' boasts a dual harmony, slow solo and fast solo, whilst other epic tracks such as the blissful 'Orion' and 'Leper Messiah' keep the album flowing well into the second half. The slower tracks 'Sanitarium' and 'The thing that should not be' don't let the album down at all. Sanitarium is beautifully melodic, whereas TTTSNB is a moderate speed metal rocker. Another one of 'Tallica's best.

Oh those were the days, when metal was real and Metallica was tearing the eardrums of metalheads a new one. Kill'em was their introduction, and a great one. Then came Ride the Lightning, continuing where they left off with Kill'em All. And then came Master Of Puppets argueably their best. Thrash bands everywhere realised the power of Metallica. Opening up with Battery and ending with Damage I.N.C., you are physically assaulted from beginning to end. This is a must have for any metalhead.
