After seeing this album live and spinning it a lot more over the years, this album rips. The riffs are sludgy, the vocals and lyrics are unique. What a banger.

The Christian metalcore band Norma Jean seem to have found a way to tinker with standard track structures and a little bit of a sorrowful atmosphere on their third full-length studio outing Redeemer. Even though the songwriting itself is notably underwhelming for a group like NJ, this recording's instrumentation is nothing short of an aggressive falcon scratching our eyeballs out as frontman Cory Brandan Putman utilizes passionate, emotional shouting in tandem with the comprehensible (and no more weak-willed) violence occurring in the background, with noteworthy help from drummer Daniel Davison. I feel that Ross Robinson's production style also does a great job at highlighting an incredibly swell majority of Redeemer's traits, at the expense of scoping out Norma Jean's aptitude for overall tenacious composition abilities as was mentioned earlier. The album's a delicious offering, to summarize.

Norma Jean's third studio album is a bit of a departure from the Botch-esque hardcore that got them famous. There are much more conventional song structures on this album, and the relentless intensity has been brought down a bit. The thing that really holds this album back is the lack of a true standout track, which unfortunately results in the songs bleeding together. That being said, songs like "Blueprints For Future Homes", "A Small Spark vs. A Great Forest", "The End Of All Things Will Be Televised", and "The Longest Lasting Statement" are all very solid tracks. It's decent hardcore with more clean vocals than Norma Jean has done before, but it's a step back for the band overall, as it is easily their most homogenous record so far in their discography.

Almost everything about this record is an improvement on O'God - the production, the vocals, the songwriting. So much gets said about their faith, however if I didn't know beforehand that they were Christians, I'd certainly not find out from their music.
It's a noisy, aggressive, passionate and well-made post-hardcore record, and should be appreciated on this basis, not on what god they believe in. Plus, they stopped ripping off Botch.
