The early 90s was an amazing time for electronica music, as some of the most acclaimed albums were released during this time. Incunabula marked the debut of Autechre in 1993. It followed the IDM/ambient trends of the day, with Autechre's own special IDM sound textured with ambient and even some hip-hop influences. Incunabula is by far Autechre's most accessible release (it was my first, and was my favorite for quite a while), and is one of my favorites. The sound production sounds a bit dated, but Incunabula still stands as one of the great electronica releases on the early 90s.

While some may say this album is inferior to 1994's Amber, I beg to differ. I'd say both are more than deserving of a 5/5.

Despite it being their debut LP, both Rob Brown and Sean Booth have said that Incunabula is merely a compilation of previously constructed material rather than an album proper. That said, it was released to great reception as part of Warp Records' Artificial Intelligence series. The way Warp Records described the series is as apt of a description as you'll ever get for Incunabula: "For long journeys, quiet nights, and club-drowsy dawns, listen with an open mind." Musically, this record is a collection of swirling ambient techno, but the IDM ideas are certainly there as well. The album is pretty long though, and with the repetition on display here, things can get pretty taxing on some of the longer tracks near the end. And because it is, evidently, just a compilation, the album doesn't flow as well as it could have. In general, though, this is some pretty dense and consuming ambient techno, as Autechre begin to come ever so more slightly into their own.

I know, that we are not the same, but people, this is the very best electronic album ever created! It's better than Amber, and even Tri Repetae is not getting close to it. The newer albums are a different story, but from the golden era, it's their best. And as being a debut album, it's far beyond classic! After years I still could listen to it, day by day, and it never gets old.

Incunabula is a nice record, and Autechre had the right train of thought in making it, but
it feels too stretched to warrant multiple listens. Ironically, "Windwind" is my favorite
track off of this album.
