The nonsense lyrics may be a turn off to some, but the fact of the matter is King Buzzo knows how to shred and sing. Crover is one Hell of a drummer, too.

Was recommended this after showing my appreciation for Nirvana. Gave it a few spins, and although entertaining in parts, Houdini fails to be a memorable record.

The Melvin's first major label debut is a bit of a double edged sword. One on hand, the more professional production helps to enhance a band's sound that relies heavily on bass, and it sounds great here. It's as powerful as any rap album that was around at the time. The worse parts are the attempts at radio play, which aren't always bad, they are just a little distracting, like the double tracked vocals on Set me Straight. They still retain their trademark doomy, sludgy sound, but there's some needed catchiness that helps to break up the monotony heard on their previous releases. The 10 minute drum solo at the end goes nowhere, and the Sky Pup interlude are pretty much wastes of time, but overall this is probably the Melvins best overall collection of songs. Best ones are Hooch, Night Goat, Going Blind, Copache', and my favorite Honey Bucket.

Houdini is a heavy sludgy sounding grunge/metal fusion with a decent amount of experimentation. The best songs had to be the faster, punkier ones.

Melvins are one of the most underrated bands of all time. They thrilled a young Kurt Cobain and even in this album you can see why. Teet and Copache are cool but the best track must be Hooch or Lizzy. This album gets a 4 from me, i usually hate 100% of metal bands but Melvins are great. Bullhead is another great album.
