Overshadowed by Apostrophe and Joe's Garage, Sleep Dirt is in fact Zappa's best 70's album, save for the two Mothers of Invention compilations released in 1970. It sounds almost as if it was recorded during Uncle Meat sessions: all the songs are intelligently crafted instrumental pieces, and only the fact that a careful Zappa listener has pretty much "heard it all" before makes it non-essential.
