1.5 very poor | Moneylishi | December 15th 22 | My goodness was this annoying to listen too. I get that they're unique and quirky, but that doesn't make it good. Also contains elements of one of my least favorite types of music ever: circus music.

4.5 superb | transgoggle | February 27th 17 | I feel like the "wackiness" or whatever of this gets a bit overstated. This is no band like Estradasphere that tries to dabble in every style they can, nor do they use theatricality as some kind of crutch. In fact, remove the chamber musical embellishments and you're left with something like Arsis, Psycroptic, Spawn of Possession, which is to say, songs driven by complex riff progression, that are still interesting. It's not to say however that their keyboardist and violinist are just there for show, nor that they would marr the band's metal side, no, i think they add a lot of depth, emphasis, impact to the riffage as well as obviously, a sense of grandeur, which somehow the convoluted songwriting just amplifies rather than detracts from. It genuinely feels like a Bosch painting. In turn i think this goth metal arrangement also heightens the contrast of a quick transition between riffs by having another shifting layer, thus the impact, tech death just feels so grey most of the time. So you get a record with innumerable unique memorable moments you can get hooked one-by-one each spin, and one that seems like a mess at first but slowly reveals connectivities, all of which makes it daunting though rewarding in the long run. Even the interludes sound like they had a lot of work put into them.

0.0 | Bitchfork | May 1st 10 | high 2/low 2.5. I want to hate this and in a lot of ways I do (fuck that violin, fuck the vocals, fuck the same structures, fuck the midsection) but there's something.

0.0 | Plutonio | April 7th 10 | This album pushes more musical boundaries than one could expect: they combine operatic voices, black metal, and strings with such odd genres as jazz, circus metal, and world music. Never does this album exude the obnoxious homogeny of Animal Collective releases, or does it exude the WTF? feel of Crotchduster. It's just pure fucking awesome.

4.5 superb | Pebster49 | December 14th 07 | Yes, this is the best album of the year of 2006,in Metal, not only is it great in musicianship it is something that has never been even dreamed about. Its so crazy, its so out there it has to be number one just on its creativity. This album is was everything I thought I would never like, but it has really stretched out my horizons and how I look at music nowadays. The drummer with his pounding double bass the violin, the 9-string Base player, the guitars going every which way, the piano, the death growling, the great vocals by their lead woman lead singer. All this in one band, and in this album it was all put together. Really I don?t know where to describe this album, but it has the heart and the great song writing now one can imagine. Each song is a emotional roller coaster you never want to get off of, because its so different and so unlike anything you have ever heard. If you have a open mind about music, I mean a real open mind, this is a great album from you.

0.0 | Acidicity | January 9th 07 | Do you guys know why Mr. Bungle sucks? Because they inspired a legion of bands who toss together seven genres, transition roughly and poorly between them, and play them simply and uninspired once they get there. Fortunately, UneXpect is not one of those bands. Circus black metal done right. It's rare that a band can create a "chaotic" album without sounding extraordinarily pretentious, but looks like UneXpcet showed us a thing or two. Do you want to hear a bold pronouncement? Here it is: all of the other bands in this genre, save one, can die. You listening, Zu and Garden Wall? Give me UneXpect and Estradasphere, and the rest can burn in hell.
