Beats, Rhymes and Life is probably the darkest (Well, it stays A Tribe Called Quest you know) album of the group, and I recognize they didn't do as much innovations as their three first. But still, you just have to check Q-Tip's answers to Westide Connection to understand how unique A Tribe Called Quest's lyrics and state of mind are unique. The productions features 'The Ummah', a group composed of Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jay Dilla, and the result is a funk/jazz (well) inspired album that shows an other side of ATCQ.
