I certainly didn't expect to be swayed this much by a relatively run of the mill emo folk album that was released to little acclaim or attention over a decade ago. But here we are. Where Young Jesus' debut album excels the most is in shaping songs bare through mostly acoustic instrumentation, but with production making every notch fuzz like a bridge wire, which all in turn make the feeling of a DIY small town project that much more effective. This, paired with the topics close to heart to anyone having experienced small town fatigue and directionlessness, makes for a beautiful and powerful album.
