The last great grunge album? Failure's Fantastic Planet is a song cycle based on grunge's best friend, heroin, and sonically it's Nirvana's In Utero re-tooled for the Pink Floyd fans. It's spacey, depressive, it's got guitars that sound like buildings falling down, and in its last third, it's got some of the best songs the grunge era produced. "The Nurse Who Loved Me", in particular, is just ridiculously good, and special praise must also be reserved for "Stuck on You" and "Another Space Song". Each song, though, is meticulously put together, with attention to detail in even the most hidden places. Even though the sound here is instantly recognizable and the sources of it obvious, nothing else from the era sounded quite like this.

This band and album are criminally underrated. No one else blends impenetrable slow burning walls of distortion and strange melodies with lovingly arranged keys quite like Failure. Ken Andrews later works even fall short of the high standard set here. Poor promotion and lack of exposure are the only reasons Failure aren't mentioned in the same breath as Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins. The NASA sponsored ambiance and heroin fueled lyrics go hand in hand to make children happy all over the world.

I questioned if it was a 5 for the longest time because it's apparent in its goodness and has songs like "Another Space Song" which just transcends reason to how good it is but the secret isn't to just pick your favorite songs and just jerk yourself over how in awe you are over them but take a trip with the album and hit all the stops along the way. Once you take it all in it only makes sense to give it a 5.

A true 90s cult classic of isolation, despair and heroin addiction. The bass heavy mix still sounds fresh at current date. This album will continue to stand the test of time.

Used to be one of my fav records but man is this inconsistent. Tragically, the butt rock is mixed in with the masterpieces and as such it struggles to get off of the ground, but by the end, Failure hit their stride beautifully. The Blank--Segue 2--Dirty Blue Balloons run alone makes this worth a listen, but then the last five tracks completely take things to another level.

(Two Days Later) Taught me that embodying a good genre doesn't necessarily make a good album. Unjustified length. Neither profound or deep when experimental, nor enjoyable when digestable. Crept to the edge of Nirvana's Nevermind shadow but never stepped out. Won't listen again anytime soon.

[GRUNGE] Grunge plus bleak space rock equals one of the best albums of the decade. There're too many amazing tracks for just one album: Sergeant Politeness, Pillowhead, Dirty Blue Balloons, Solaris, Nurse Who Loved Me, Another Space Song, AND Heliotropic! If you like any of these songs, do yourself a service and LISTEN TO THE ENTIRE ALBUM ALREADY!
