0.0 | BMDrummer | July 9th 14 | The second side of My War may have been a bit shocking to some, but I highly doubt anyone saw this coming. Sure, Free Jazz had also been introduced, even some spoken elements occasionally, but who would've possibly thought that there would be a whole record of these elements? We all know what it is, Family Man is one side of Henry's spoken word pieces, the other side Greg Ginn and Co. doing instrumental Free Jazz. The result is actually kind of enjoyable to be completely honest, and especially interesting in the instrumental department. Henry's spoken pieces will come off as pretentious to some, but sometimes they work. Although, I've always enjoyed the second side more since it seems to have more to offer, especially since Greg's riffs are so dissonant and cold. Sure, it sometimes sounds sloppy and what not, but it's Free Jazz, what do you expect? All in all, Family Man is an interesting record, and a sometimes good one.

1.5 very poor | Erwann S. STAFF | April 7th 20 | The album that broke Black Flag down into its increasingly distinct component parts - Rollins and the band - with one spoken word side and an instrumental one, with Armaggedon Man trying to tie the two concept. Both sides are very crappy, especially Rollins' one. 1.7

2.0 poor | Risodo | February 1st 18 | The "experimental" model adopted by the band, consisting of half dialogue and the other instrumental part is a complete disaster. The sentences articulated by Henry Rollins do not pass any message and try to convince the fence of the figure of the typically American father. Some passages are hilarious and even make the cover of the album lose its impact. The instrumental part is more acceptable, but totally changes the positioning of the band in the genre. Greg Ginn's solos are pathetic.

1.0 awful | TheHamburgerman | August 15th 16 | Rollins spoken word part is mostly hilarious on the parts he probably wouldn't want you to laugh at. He talks about a family man who puts on christmas lights (which is bad? I really don't know what he's getting at), being a rat who want's to be a talkshow host and killing a slug with the ernest of Hemmingway talking about the war. There are a few moments in which Rollins seems to get a ball rolling, but they are few and short. What Tom Waits can do with a story, Rollins simply can't. As for the second half, dominated by Ginn's guitar. What some others have considered it to be some interesting form of avantgarde of songwriting, to me it's just pure rubbish. I guess in this regard Tom Waits could also do what Ginn can't.

2.5 average | TheManMachine | December 4th 13 | We learn that Rollins' rage is probably more effective with a backing band and that Ginn without constraint is equal parts sketchy and exhilarating. Maniacally odd enough for the occasional listen.
