Babel does absolutely nothing to improve upon the glimpses of hope found on Sigh No More. Seriously. Same song writing, same stupid tropes, and the same annoying banjo twanging samey shit each and every song. So why is this even a 2.5? Because despite their glaring flaws and weird ungression (there's no degression or progression here), Mumford and Sons are admittedly cute and endearing. And they have some good one-liners. But honestly.

While some people are passing this off due to its identical nature of their previous release and the fact that they basically have this down to a formula, there is something about Mumford and Sons that I just adore. It's refreshingly uplifting, feels genuine, and it just hits home (but I guess that's only for me). Too often I find myself repeating the melodies of these dudes. It's a good release that will keep previous fans of the band content.

Another 2012 "indie" juggernaut, this one actually won the Album of the Year Grammy Award! Mucho impressivo. I kinda get it: it tries to be epic and joyful, but the songwriting simply isn't on par with the energy and skills they display. The most famous single "I Will Wait" kind of makes you jump on your feet and scream its chorus, but falls short of becoming the anthem they wanted it to be. Likewise, the banjo riffing is cool, but from the second song on it becomes difficult to discern each of these banjo solis. Listen to The Waterboys' Fisherman's Blues instead.

I'm imaging a scenario in recording this album where Mumford and Sons tried to literally clone their first success. But in the cloning process lost the soul that gave their first album it's passion and grace. That seems to be what happened with Babel. It's singles "I will Wait" and "Lover of the Light" really show a sharp decline in quality and rise in cheesiness that the first album gave in heartfelt honesty. rThere are some decent tracks, but they're unfortunately too far between that the album hardly leaves any lasting impression or desire to listen to again at all.

Babel is a darker Sigh No More. For this album, they push their boundaries by varying the song structure (ever so slightly) and attempting to not create the same song ten times. But even with the darker tone and gravely vocals, it comes off as laughable at times. Not so much progression, even though they tried new things, as a lateral move.

There are a few points against it that makes me ultimately not enjoy Babel. It starts wonderfully with the title track that in my opinion trumps most of the songs on their debut and on this album but then after that I feel things begin to blend together too quickly. I feel everything takes a predictable route becuase Mumford & Sons taught their sound to us too well on their debut album and it's a shame because with the sound they have created, I really think I could enjoy their music more if they took a less structured, unpredictable road but even the same lyrical themes return here and similar metaphors about stones, hearts and religion. On top of that, the overuse of the banjo and the lack of diversity in how it's played finds me drowning it out or being bothered by it in some of these songs. All in all, I feel they could have done more to revolutionise themselves in two years.
